exscape@kbin.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•when you upgrade an OS, do you clean install or upgrade?3·1 year agoI don’t think I’ve ever made a “clean upgrade” on Linux. I’ve done the opposite though, that is, bring an old install over to a new computer.

Google search results have indeed gotten pretty bad, but I’ve yet to see anyone surpass them.
How I felt 10 minutes ago when I fixed a bug just after zipping it for release.
Ubuntu is just getting worse and worse. I was pretty happy running Ubuntu server for years after moving from Gentoo; I jag lost interest in spending time taking care for that server and wanted something easy.
I went to Debian half a year ago and it’s been great. Should’ve done it earlier.
Mostly for finding information that for whatever reason can be difficult to find using search engines. For example, I’ve used ChatGPT to ask spoiler-free questions about plot points in books I’m reading, which has worked rather well. It hasn’t spoiled me yet, but rather tells me that giving more information would be a spoiler.
Last time I tried to look something up on Google, carefully, I got a massive spoiler for the end of the entire book series.
I also use it for code-related questions at times, but very rarely, and mostly when using a language I’m not used to. Such as when I wrote an expect script for the first (and perhaps only) time recently.

I started experimenting with it when it was being introduced to FreeBSD, around 2007-2008, but only truly started using it last year, for two NASes (on Linux).
It’s complex for a filesystem, but considering all it can do, that’s not surprising.

exscape@kbin.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•GNU Coreutils 9.5 Can Yield 10~20% Throughput Boost For cp, mv & cat Commands9·1 year agoSorry for the nitpick, but you probably mean GB/s (or GiB/s, but I won’t go there). Gbps is gigabits per second, not gigabytes per second.
Since both are used in different contexts yet they differ by about a factor of 8, not confusing the two is useful.

My systems running Debian stable with systemd also aren’t affected…

Here’s a 3 meter UHS certified HDMI cable for $9.99. I doubt you can find one for much less that handles 4K 120 Hz w/ HDR properly.

The Nokia XR21 is one LCD phone released in 2023:
IPS LCD, 120Hz, 450 nits (typ), 550 nits (HBM)
Another phone with brightness listen on gsmarena is the Oukitel WP30 Pro:
IPS LCD, 120Hz, 430 nitsTake a few popular OLED phones for comparison…
Galaxy S24: Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X, 120Hz, HDR10+, 2600 nits (peak)
iPhone 15: Super Retina XDR OLED, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 1000 nits (HBM), 2000 nits (peak)Or for consoles, Steam Deck LCD is about 400 nits, while the OLED is up to about 600, or 1000 in HDR.

Every contributor has a copy of the Git repo, so isn’t the worst case basically losing access to issues and similar data? And even that is very unlikely.
20 feet is fine unless you want 4K 120 Hz and stuff like that. I’m which case 20 feet may also be fine with a passive cable, but a bit on the edge of where AOC starts to make sense.
As for 1080p and 4K30 I think 10 meters can work passively.
Edit: My in-head unit conversion was a bit off, 20 feet is probably a bit over what’s sensible for 4K120. But it’s probably fine for non-UHS HDMI.

I have never brushed my teeth too hard and have always used very soft toothbrushes, but I used to brush for 6-7 minutes, and my gums have suffered for it. Way too much of my teeth are now exposed, which is both ugly and causes sensitivity.
In the long run, if one keeps this up, teeth will start falling out.Don’t overbrush.
exscape@kbin.socialto Gaming@beehaw.org•What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?1·2 years agoThis is less of an issue in multiplayer games, as they rarely have very narrow FOVs by default. The worst offenders are often console ports and slower first-person games.
FWIW while it’s a competitive advantage with high FOV, if there is a slider, it’s still fair since everybody can use a higher FOV if they want to.
It’s not all advantage though, aiming gets harder (aside from the distortions).I don’t see why it matters at all in single-player. So what if it makes the game easier? Who cares?
The fact that I don’t have to stop due to almost vomiting also makes it easier in a way, but I really don’t mind. The fact that the optimal FOV differs on a per-player basis is of course exactly why I want a FOV slider everywhere. I usually prefer about 105 degrees horizontal (in 16:9), while some modern games default in the range 75-85.
exscape@kbin.socialto Gaming@beehaw.org•What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?4·2 years agoFOV slider and option to disable head bob if present. Games with a too narrow FOV and/or head bob are unplayable for tons of people who suffer from motion sickness, and it’s such a shame to have so many good games ruined by it.

In hardware unboxeds test, it’s better than native in some titles, and better or equivalent in half of titles tested.
It looks way better than native w/ TAA for me in BG3 (at 1440p). TAA is way too blurry. And yet it’s also faster.
You can still block it easily with the command prompt (Shift+F10 during the install) as mentioned. But don’t let that stop you from switching to Linux if you feel like it.
