I try so hard to show people how to do things themselves when they ask me to help them with various tech…whatever, and almost universally get told “no.”

I saw numbers from some study about tech and people’s relationships with it or whatever and it’s insane how many people think Facebook is the entire internet now that they’ve had that integrated browser for so long. It’s just all they ever learned of technology, magic rectangle go to Facebook.

I understand not being “tech savvy,” a “hobbyist,” whatever - but I can’t fathom not bothering to consider how something I use daily works AT ALL. I hate cars but I learned enough to understand how to tentatively diagnose a problem and handle minor maintenance myself, but some people take their car to the dealer like 4x a year instead.

I’m 35 now, and I was told recently that not having a Facebook account is a red flag for dating now.

Just before all this blackout stuff started lining up I got a week ban for abusing reports on a report they agreed with and actioned. I’ve been pretty over Reddit anyway so here we are lets goooooo lol

90% of the engagement I’ve seen regarding Lemmy is “Why isn’t this Reddit and work exactly the same as Reddit? When WILL it work exactly the same as Reddit?”

I’m already seeing hostility a la “Well I guess we’ll see if the devs LiStEn To ThIeR uSeRs” in regards to communities getting tied to a central authority, aka the thing this was explicitly designed to not do. I made my first ever Twitter account a month or two before Musk bought it, for purely NSFW reasons. I’d log in every couple weeks or whatever, handle my business, and move along. After he bought it, I said whatever I’m not doing anything useful data wise so I’ll continue my few times a month visits.

First post-Musk visit, it’s fine. Business handled, close my incog window, move on.

Second post-Musk visit, I log in, and it’s CP as far as the eye can see. I immediately deleted my account.

This. Reddit and their stans keep trotting out this, what, 2% or so of “super users” as a “Who fucking cares about 2% let em cry” but -

Who tf do you think is providing the content and doing the moderation that keeps it falling apart? I learned in all this there’s a big viewership who don’t even have accounts, they’re not suddenly going to sign up and start posting and interacting out the wazoo. People who just comment and chat after work aren’t going to take up moderation duties (especially since all the stuff that made it manageable is bust.)

It can float without that 2% for a while, but it’s going to become outdated quick. You’ll lose that cultural edge of typing “Reddit” after internet searches, cause it stops working because there’s no longer ALWAYS posts about every little thing. The people bickering and providing entertainment are gone, they were all on RIF or the other app, so people stop popcorn scrolling.

I wonder if it’ll go Twitter and just start catering to the fascists cause it’s the only market left.

I never understood why people were so into Twitter, from my perspective it’s like a new media version of press releases - big name people harp about whatever they harp about and I read about it elsewhere if it’s relevant to me.

I’ve never had an issue with the main app or site myself, and have been on Reddit for like 15+ years now? Fuckin forever IDK. I’m still down to bail for Lemmy, I support everyone who finds use in 3rd party apps plus I’m tired of bonkers bans and power hungry mods while ridiculous shit gets left up as A-OK.

I’m actually on a 7 day ban right now, for “abusing the report feature.” The linked report they provided as proof of abuse? A comment they had just messaged me to tell me “We agree this has violated TOS and have removed the violating content.”

So…“You’re right, that DOES break the rules…But could you STOP FUCKING MAKING US PRESS TWO BUTTONS ALREADY?!”
