‘Normal’ Mint is still based on Ubuntu, but there is LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition), which is Debian based.

I’m not sure what kind of features Edge has for PDFs, but FireFox has recently gotten an update to it’s PDF editor so you can edit them in FireFox. Might be worth checking out if that is truly the only reason.
I assume you mean the just released 9000 series? My setup has a 7000 card and has been running for 2 years with out issues
