borari@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Linux@lemmy.ml•Do you encrypt your drives and why or why not?2·4 months agoI don’t have FDE (BitLocker) enabled on my Windows 11 gaming PC. It sits in my house and has nothing on it but video games and video game related shit. I don’t even have my password manager installed for logging in to Steam, GoG or whatever other launcher. I manually type passwords in from the vault on my phone if the app doesn’t support QR code login like discord. Also I paid for this ridiculous m.2 nvme drive, I’m not going to just give up iops bc i want my game install files encrypted.
I don’t use FDE on my NAS. Again it doesn’t leave my house. I probably should I guess, bc there is some stuff on there that would cause me to have industry certs revoked if they leaked, but idk I don’t. Everything irreplaceable is backed up off site, but the down time it would take to rebuild my pirated media libraries from scratch vs just swapping disks and rebuilding has me leery.
I have FDE enabled on both my MacBooks. They leave the house with me, it seems to make sense.
I don’t use FDE on Linux VMs I create on the MacBooks, the disk is already encrypted.
My iphone doesn’t have the option to not use FDE I don’t think.
I use encrypted rsync backups to store NAS stuff in the cloud. I use a PGP key on my yubikey to further encrypt specific files on my MacBooks as required beyond the general FDE.

Yeah, I agree. Labor of Love should be something like Terraria, Stardew Valley, the No Man’s Sky turnaround, the content released with the BG3 patches, CP2077 patches, etc.
Releasing paid DLC is just labor, not a labor of love.

It has not defaulted to root prompt in many years.
borari@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Technology@lemmy.ml•My ISP choices are Verizon or Xfinity. Who should I choose?6·5 months agoExactly. Internet delivered to the home by some form of wired connection will always be better than internet delivered via cellular, regardless of whether it’s an old-school hotspot or a newer 5g router with the cellular modem built in.
As far as ISPs go, Fios is pretty good. I have them, they’re relatively cheap for 1Gbps symmetrical, I regularly speed test at like 980Mbps, I get a regular public IP (no cgnat), the pub ip my router pulls only rotates when the router power cycles, the ONT box is just Ethernet so I can use my MikroTik and not have to dick around with making an ISP supplied modem/router pass through, idk I’m happy.
Not sure if they support ipv6 in my market, I just have all that disabled on my router. I know I know, I should stand it up, but I really don’t feel like it.
borari@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Technology@lemmy.ml•My ISP choices are Verizon or Xfinity. Who should I choose?14·5 months agoIf Fios, Verizon hands down. Symmetric, they don’t do data caps, etc.
I’m not saying they’re a great company put anything, but the less bad in my opinion.
I feel like I might get a ton of downvotes for this, but I kind of disagree. Maybe when it comes to things like texture detail, we certainly don’t need every single hair on Roach modeled with full physics or anything.
That’s only a subset of what constitutes graphics in a game though. I think that while it is computationally expensive, the improvements in lighting that we’re seeing contribute to making graphics more realistic and do matter.
I get that people meme on Ray Tracing and the whole RTX On thing, but lighting techniques like Path Tracing, Global Illumination, and Dynamic Illumination are just as much a generational shift as physics was in HL2. Output resolution and texture resolution got pushed to a point where any further gains are marginal improvements at best. Physics is getting to that point, although there’s still room for improvement. Look at how well the finals handles destruction physics, or the ballistics models used in Arma 3. Lighting is the next thing being refined, and it has a ways to go. I’d bet that in 10 years full, real time, dynamic, ray traced lighting will be taken for granted, and we’ll be arguing whether there’s any value or added realism benefit to increasing the number of individual rays cast by each light source, or how many bounces they take. I’d also not be surprised if people were memeing about RTX Sound On at that point and saying that game audio peaked with HRTF or Spatial Audio.

And even more You must understand, that using a boat may be dangerous: -The boat may fall over. -You may fall out of the boat. -The boat may hit a rock. -Your shoes may get wet. -The boat may get filled with water. -The boat may sink. -Another boat may hit Your boat. -The boat may drift a long distance away. -You may get lost with the boat. -When rowing, You may get blisters in Your hands and butt. -If You get into water, You may drown or get hypothermia. -Killer sharks may attack You. -Anything else may happen

Side note, who is behind that site, and why do they have so many ads for Alex Jones? Kind of liking how they all link to the infowars domain, which is going to be owned by someone else soon hopefully though.
borari@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Gaming@beehaw.org•Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of December 1st1·5 months agoWe’re reaching the end of the current season of THE FINALS, so I’ve been grinding for the last seasonal reward skin tier.
I’ve been kind of down on myself for getting sucked in to the seasonal cycle of modern FPS games and letting my single player stuff lay neglected, but the finals is such a phenomenal shooter I can’t help myself. I alternate between wanting more people to play and experience it because of how good it is, to being happy it’s small and not inundated with people. While the community can be a bit toxic, I get matched with a lot more just generally chill people than not, and more people on mic communicating about the game than I can remember in a really long time.
I need to get around to finishing bg3, and cp2077 now that I have a new gpu.
I got psychonauts on a steam sale a few years ago and still need to get around to it also, thanks for the reminder.

borari@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the strangest insult that you have ever received/given?2·6 months agoHahahhahahhahahahhahshajhahahahahhashahhaahahahahahahahhaha what a funny, original joke! I’ve never heard that before, not even a single time in my entire life! You should do standup!
I work on a computer at a desk all day. I’m do penetration testing and red team operations, so I spend a fuck ton of time doing training and development courses and labs which usually just involve typing a bunch of shit into a terminal window, both during work and on my own time (I genuinely enjoy it, it’s not a shitty workplace colonizing my off time situation), and I’ve played games my entire life.
Idk I’ve never had this problem. Screens recharge me, it’s people that drain me. I’d have the same flipped question for product vendors that are always at conferences and stuff, or business insurance sales people, just wondering how they get through all these small talk conversations, sales calls, dinners with clients, etc., without a chance to just sit behind a screen and answer people at whatever pace they need.
Oh. I have a variable height desk I got from DeskHaus. I love it. I’m standing a fair amount of the time I’m working. I have a decent SteelCase chair I bought during the beginning of covid. I got it from a refurb reseller, but even brand new it’s not their nicest chair, but it’s expensive enough and holding up well enough that I don’t see a reason to replace it yet. Standing through the workday helps me not feel exhausted and tired of sitting in the same chair for 12 hours since I haven’t been.
