  • I’m the same. It is quite jaring to see an add now. They seems very obnoxious.

The only issue in have is ads in podcasts. This isn’t a huge deal as the provider usually determine add based on IP so i get a 30 second ad in a language I can’t understand.

    Any solutions to this?

P.S. before I switched from YouTube I disabled all data collection and personalisation a few notable ads I used to receive:

    • Ads for balls soap (this ad was repugnant)
    • Ads for Muslim speed dating, with male chaperone (I’m not a Muslim)
    • A 1hour Chinese party political conference, in Chinese (I don’t speak Chinese)

^ Ive got the last one saved out of curiosity.

I remember a time when YouTube was not owned by google and was ad free.

The internet was better before all of this tracking.

  • Thanks for the reply. I’m fairy average Joe. I’ll mainly use this machine for downloading files and general browsing. I don’t have any personal files or accounts on that device.

I’m mainly concerned with neglecting to enable (or disabling) something critical or accidentally downloading something malicious (although this hasn’t happened for many many years).

  • I do this:

    1. Tell myself I’m not going to do it. What ever it is, I’m not going to do it.

    2. Do the bare minimum thing like: open up a word document, turn on a tap to wash dishes, take something out of a box.

    3. By commencing the task I’ll usually default into doing the next part like reading the document, washing a dish, sorting something out.

    Additional tips:

    • Break big things into small chunks.
    • Dont get overloaded. If your a room do it one draw at a time so you can stop when ever. Getting trapped in a “I can’t sleep until this is finished” task is a trap.
    • Lists to keep track.

P.S. I was in recruitment 13 years ago and once thought about throwing myself down the stairs to get out of work. I did that job for 2x years and used it to move to a better industry.

You can make change in your life.

Good luck, we’re all counting on you :)
