MrMonkey@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do most people choose to use WhatsApp over telegram??41·2 years agoEveryone I know uses signal, even our neighborhood group messaging is a signal group.
Then again my neighbors are all reasonable people.
MrMonkey@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a scam that's so normalized that we don't even realize it's a scam anymore?4·2 years agoActual health insurance is literally illegal in the USA. It’s all some sort of partially pre-paid health subscription crap that you get punished for not buying. Every time the government steps in the help they make it worse, even as far back as WW2 with “salary caps” leading to extra non-monetary incentives, like medical insurance, company car, etc. Then the government gives business tax breaks to provide insurance making it more expensive for an individual to buy so now your health is tied to your work. Then they help by… etc. etc. etc.
MrMonkey@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you could go back and tell your childhood self something about their future that would improve their childhood, what would it be?7·2 years agoDepends on what age you could as “child”. But yeah.
MrMonkey@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it me, or the hive mind mentality has come over here as well?21·2 years agochill, bro
Debian. It’s FOSS.
I can have a 100% FOSS system. Everything else includes non-free stuff by default.
How? I don’t see what could find dns-over-https in the middle of other https traffic?
As as US idiot,
Checks out.
PiHole with upstream dns-over-tls or dns-over-https.
Anybody who wants to can get around DNS blocks. Sure it’ll stop Aunt Sally, but anyone who cares will get around it. It’s a really dumb way of doing things.

This. Someone needed some rage bait.
MrMonkey@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How come we experience so much more inflation than deflation? in other words, why does our buying power decrease far more often than it increases?32·2 years agoInflation is a tax on hoarding money.
It’s a tax on my savings and my retirement. My savings lose 2% a year, on purpose. This means I have to play in the investment game to so much as break even. I’d rather not have to play the stock market game and just save my money for retirement without it losing value.
The TLDR:
They hate capitalism because they’re losers and they think that under a different system they wouldn’t be such a loser. But they would be.
“someone has a different opinion than me, they must be dumb”
Go back to reddit.
edit: You know down voting something doesn’t make it untrue? This is true whether you like it or not.
Every time I ask for “capitalism” problems I get answers about what the government does.
“too big to fail”? Government bailouts.
“antitrust”? Government granted monopolies and making the laws so that barriers to entry are too big.
“police shootings” Government gang.
“inflation”? Government monetary policy.
“colonization”? Government expansion
“not enough social programs”? Government policy.
Then you’ve got the sub-70s who go on about “exploitation” which is rooted entirely in fiction.
Life requires work. All life everywhere. Humans aren’t exempt from this; demanding that others do all your work and provide for you or free isn’t going to work.
Some of these people would complain that they have to chew their own food.
People forget that capitalism has lifted literally billions of people out of poverty, it’s advanced our technology to where it’s basically magic. It increased the amount of food we can grow with fewer people allowing people to move past subsistence farming (which many socialist countries reverted to).
Capitalism uses people greed to provide better, cheaper, faster versions of things…
Then the government gets involved and instead of blaming the government they’re told to blame capitalism, so they do.

Works the same as M-b for me (backwards-word)

MrMonkey@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.ml•"Kids Can't Use Computers" is now ten years old, and it's only gotten worse1·2 years agoSo you should only major in things you already know?
Any decent compsci program starts out assuming the student knows nothing.
Besides computer science is about math, not actually interacting with a specific os.
MrMonkey@lemm.eeto Technology@beehaw.org•A response to the Sarah Silverman suing OpenAI post from yesterday: [AI doesn't read or write like humans, and we shouldn't act like it does.]English25·2 years agoMost of this stems from a misunderstand of how LLM work.
The original work is not stored anywhere. No copy of it has been made. Just tons and tons of statistics used to inform models.
Since there is no copy there is no violation of copyright. Again, no copy of the book is getting made. The content of the books is not stored “verbatim”. The book is not copied. I don’t know how many other ways to put this.
Summarizing a book also does not require one to have “read” it, contrary to the complaint. I never read “The DaVinci Code”, but I can give a summary of it.
With assertions in the complaint being clearly false it’s hard to take it seriously and it’ll get chucked the first time a judge has to deal with it.
Maybe Silverman would have a point if it were standard practice to pay royalties to people you get inspiration from. But she doesn’t pay everyone who wrote anything she read, said anything she heard, or other comedians who influenced her. So why should someone influenced by her pay?
If I read 100,000 books how do you determine “which one” I got inspiration from? Same situation here.
Please remember things like this when you say “hate speech isn’t free speech”. I wouldn’t put it past the Republicans to claim that pro-LGBT+ or pro-choice is hate speech against Christians.
