It’s prohibited to sell highway vignettes for more than what the state charges on the official website (which is not a lot) but the scammers in border regions obviously found ways around that by charging huge service fees for an automated process (other than typing a licence plate) or using a ridiculous € conversion rate, and marking their shack more prominently than the official vending machines found on all highways close to border crossings. Not a great first impression for visitors!

Back up your data using tools like bdfr and GTFO. You can also use shreddit to both archive and overwrite your posts and comments (perhaps with links to your Lemmy account, as I did - I give people any of my deleted Reddit content they ask for here).

But how about another, non-VPN IP? Check your IP and try unplugging your modem for a few minutes, this could make your IP lease expire and the ISP issue a new one.

I overwrote my posts and comments on my 50k-karma account with links to Lemmy during the API protest and left. I have the contents saved and respond to people who ask for it (on Lemmy of course). Still, my Contributor Quality Score remains “High” (tier 4/5) to this day.

There are 3 main forms of IP: patents (not relevant here), copyright and trademarks. Without consent of the holder, copyright only runs out on a time basis but what you’re calling IP falls into the “trademark” category, which don’t run out if continuously used by the holder. Some trademarks have become genericized and therefore invalid but this is a concern with product names, not fictional characters. There is no precedent in which fanon became so popular it overruled a trademark, because it can’t be published officially (it is easy to sue a single artist, it’s impossible to stop millions of people from calling any moving stairs “escalators” despite the former OTIS trademark).

Did you mean fanon “so different a trademark doesn’t apply”? That would be a different character entirely.

There are tools to migrate your subscriptions by exporting them and importing them on your new szmer.info account, or (edit:) you can use the native export/import tool in the web UI @squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de mentioned (just open the links in browser, not app, while logged in). The publicly visible contents (posts, comments) of your account will stay on the old one obviously. There is not much else you might wish to copy, saved posts/comments are difficult across instances (there is no universal post ID) and votes would be equally difficult and also unethical.

Recommended to edit your old account’s description and posts to add a link to the new account whose inbox is actually going to be checked months from now, so people can actually reach you. I don’t think there is a script ready but you can just copy-paste manually four times.

When images are scaled up in browsers or apps to fill the screen, they usually use bilinear filtering or interpolation, which works well with photos but blurs pixel boundaries. By scaling up the pictures beforehand using the nearest-neighbor (blocky) method to a multiple of the original resolution (here 8x), you reduce or eliminate the blurring. The command works on Linux if you have ImageMagick installed, for Windows you also need to add magick in front IIRC. You can use convert instead of mogrify to avoid overwriting the original images but you then need to specify an output filename at the end, for example ob%01d.png for a counter of multiple filenames.
