My family is fairly well off, and nobody needs anything.
We have a poor tradition of buying gifts nobody needs.
I’ve spoken with some of my family and we’re going to change this to make Christmas about giving to those in need. Unfortunately, everyone has slightly different interests and I’m having a hard time coming up with impactful charities for various family members.
Does anyone know of some (global or Canadian) charities in these categories?
- Environment
- Animals
- Human Rights/Poverty
- Technology
Some charities I’ve got so far:
- The Water Project (Human Rights)
- Software Freedom Conservancy (Technology)
- Godot (Technology)
- Doctors Without Borders (Human Rights)
Any suggestions appreciated (:. Share this post with your family if you want to start something like this too!

Just a couple off the top of my head for technology: Electronic Frontier Foundation, Center for Humane Technology, Center for Digital Democracy
Awesome! Going to look into all of them!
Gutenberg (free public domain e-books)
Lineage OS (foundation of many open source Android system)
Wikipedia (duh)
Wikipedia doesn’t need your money. They have enough to stay operarional for probably a decade to come.
Are there no local charities which help directly to these in needs?
For Animals from other species, I would recommend looking for a “Sanctuary” run by vegans (ethical ones if you think there are several types) which use the money to take care of the individuals inside the Sanctuary.
Givewell.org, maximize the good you can do.
