When you host your own Lemmy instance that means every server ypu federate with is going to copy its dataz including images to your server. That means that if you federate with someone who is poorly moderated, you can end up hosting CSAM yourself. You need to be prepared to deal with that problem.
I did it for awhile but didn’t want to deal with the CSAM. Shut it down after a few weeks.
Sure, but I came from Windows. Is the security situation better over there? Flatpaks just work. I only install verified flatpaks, and I remove most permissions with flatseal before even launching it.
I don’t understand the hate for flatpak. I wouldn’t even be on Linux if it wasn’t for flatpaks. I tried to switch many times over the years and it was such a PITA. With flatpaks I made the switch about a year ago and it finally stuck. Even got my wife to switch.
Existing aliases continue to work on Simplelogin. And I wish I would have known that beforehand.

Discord calls it a server but its really just a different term for a chat room. Discord does not allow you to host on your own infrastructure its all locked down and closed source.
They are not hosting it themselves. All infrastructure is fully controlled by Discord and they are subject to all Discord rules and decisions.

The only thing that sucks about it is some sites just flat out don’t work well. For example, in Librewolf I cannot login to my banks website. The site loads, but the login just hangs. Firefox it works immediately.
I use ducks AI chat to help me with small tasks and its honestly pretty great. Always worked and has provided me with useful results.
They claim its anonymous, maybe they are lying, maybe they are not. I make sure to rinse anything I put in there first just in case.
How are you installing Signal? I installed it from their website and it was constantly throwing up messages about missing play store.
Signal is the only app on that list whose app is open source. That means it can be audited to see if they are telling the truth.

Yes I agree. I was just offering a counter to the statement that Vaultwarden isnt as safe as Bitwarden. They both are encrypted but my vaultwarden instance is a lot less likely to experience a breach than Bitwarden. The guys with real skill are going after Bitwarden not me.
Just to play devils advocate. Bitwarden.com is a much more valuable target. My instance is behind a VPN. I think its actually far more likely Bitwarden will have a breach similar to LastPass then I will. But I agree with you mostly.
