when you turn 18 you will be grateful there are people like me out there covering your lazy ass lmao
Jediwan@lemy.lolto Linux@lemmy.ml•Just made the switch to Linux as a lifetime Windows user.11·3 months agoWindows 11 no longer “just working” is what made me finally take Linux seriously as an option and I am so glad I did.
I genuinely think it is ready for prime time. As I said elsewhere the concept of immutable distros is a game changer for those of us who like to customize but hate the command line
Jediwan@lemy.lolto Linux@lemmy.ml•Just made the switch to Linux as a lifetime Windows user.7·3 months agoImmutable distros help tremendously with the “It just works (and doesn’t stop just worksing)” aspect. Fedora Kinote is what finally allowed me to transition from Windows. Literally zero issues for over eight months now and I am not a super techie person. I hate the command line and need GUIs.
Honestly I think an immutable KDE distro is going to be the windows killer for pretty much anyone looking to switch. It’s literally better than Windows in every way.
lmao are you trying to talk me out of working to help you?

There is so much you can do about it, here’s a simple suggestion: promote open censorship-resistant communication systems like Lemmy.
When I meet someone who doesn’t care, I work twice as hard to fix things.
I wanted to but everyone on Lemmy told me I was an idiot for wanting a feature Mac and Windows have had for a decade (decrypt on login) .
But seriously it’s just not there on Linux yet. Either you encrypt and have two passwords, or give up convenience features like biometrics. Anything sensitive lives somewhere else.

I used to hate when people would suggest a “better” distro for a newbie but now that I’ve tried Fedora I understand and agree that it is the best. Specifically kinote but also silverblue.
EDIT: I feel I should clarify that IMO OPs pick of Debian is also really good
Thanks for this, so any 802.11r router would work?
oof on the expensive side but might have to do it. Were you able to install open wrt on it?
It was still a good suggestion thanks. Something with openwrt is preferred but anything that’s not google is an improvement.
Thanks! openwrt works on these?
Mesh in this case means one wifi network visible to wireless devices with multiple nodes broadcasting it. In my case both nodes are connected via ethernet.
Jediwan@lemy.lolto Linux@lemmy.ml•How can we make Linux more appealing as "just works"?5·8 months agoFedora Kinote just works.
Jediwan@lemy.lolto Linux@lemmy.ml•This week in KDE: per-monitor brightness control and “update then shut down”7·8 months agoI used GNOME for years because people say it’s “easier”, but it’s not “easier” it’s just simpler. I almost never need to go to the command line with KDE whereas with GNOME it was a weekly occurrence. I am frankly embarrassed I wrote off KDE for so long.
My exact experience too. Fedora “just works”. I especially like the immutable varieties for even more “just works (and continues to just works)-iness”
