CD Projekt has shareholders. Shareholders expect revenue growth with less to no expense growth.

GOG wants to grow expenses (developing patches for niche games) with little potential for revenue. Shareholders don’t tend to like doing things for goodness sake, while private owners can do whatever they like.

Except that it is based on bullshit. Vincke was saying that designers (non-artists) are able to use gen-AI to iterate their descriptions of what they are looking for instead of going back and forth with concept artists before they even know what they want. The gen-AI content never leaves the moodboard stage.

Read through that recently too. Loved it.

Earthsea is a fascinating read. The first book is 1960s groundbreaking fantasy that forms part of the root of all modern fantasy, but feels very old by modern standards. The series saw infrequent releases for decades, creating a window into how fantasy has matured.

The only real impacts it has had are making me pay more attention to how I feel and more intentional about how I eat. I’m not going back for seconds just because they are there since I consciously decided that my initial portion was a good amount. I’m also not going a day without eating since it didn’t cross my mind because I can see that little line slowly go down and it reminds me that food is good.

Modern tech is amazing. The management of T1D has been reduced to a glance at my phone every once in a while and a couple keystrokes when I eat something.

I was talking to someone recently who was diagnosed as a little kid and the stuff that they went through sounded awful. Their adult management of it is no better than mine is for having gone through that.

Sounds similar to the months before my T1 diagnosis at 27. More and more thirsty, less and less hungry. Water would fly through me too, making me suddenly have to pee not long after drinking.

They have two avenues to make money:

1. Sell commercial services such as customer support bots. They get customers thanks to the massive buzz their free services generated.
2. Milking investors, the real way to make money.

Generative AI doesn’t get any training in use. The explosion in public AI offerings falls into three categories:

1. Saves the company labor by replacing support staff
2. Used to entice users by offering features competitors lack (or as catch-up after competitors have added it for this reason)
3. Because AI is the current hot thing that gets investors excited

To make a good model you need two things:

1. Clean data that is tagged in a way that allows you to grade model performance
2. Lots of it

User data might meet need 2, but it fails at need 1. Running random data through neural networks to make it more exploitable (more accurate interest extraction, etc) makes sense, but training on that data doesn’t.

This is clearly demonstrated by Google’s search AI, which learned lots of useful info from Reddit but also learned absurd lies with the same weight. Not just overtuned-for-confidence lies, straight up glue-the-cheese-on lies.

That’s exactly what it is. Firefox’s advanced tracking protection blocks connections to social media sites from other sites so that social media can’t see your behavior on the rest of the Internet.

Twitter started moving some things to a different domain and FF saw it as a third-party, blocking connections from it to the old Twitter domains.

Yet another reason the rebrand is dumb.

Have you ever heard big cats? They sound like little cats but… deeper. I feel like dinosaurs would sound like birds with similar deepening, depending on the size of the dino.

Yeah, I got most of the way through DoS2 and gave up. Every fight was a giant mess of surfaces. Reducing that makes BG3 far more enjoyable.

My wife and I had the same opinion. Magical to run around the castle for a few hours and do the early classes, surprisingly good combat mechanics, but then… Nothing.

It is really hurt by the inclusion of brooms. They necessitate a huge world so you can’t cross it in a minute, but then it’s too spread out and empty. At least in Ghost Recon my world-design-crippling flying devices have rockets and gattling guns.
