I posted this a year or two ago and got hit by a huge wave of furious Brave users lol. Occasionally to this day someone will stumble on it and post some tirade
I think some people won’t be able to switch just because they’ve passed the point where learning new tech is possible. But I do think for those with the will to change over, it will increasingly actually be happening rather than being muttered a threat to Microsoft, especially because the main pain points of the past (software exclusivity) is starting to break down. Some games are now running better on Linux. MS Office is increasingly being superseded by alternatives like Gsuite, Libreoffice, or just learning to code in easy languages like Python/R. And unlike in the past when Microsoft overplayed its hand and changed course to regain users with Windows 7, 10, etc, this time it seems like they aren’t going to change. They are in too deep.
You can only abuse your customers so much before they move on. I have long enjoyed using Windows, but when they announced my perfectly usable laptop wouldn’t be able to get 11 thanks to no TPM, and I had to go through a complicated set of hoops to manually install it, that was my breaking point. I will keep Windows for some limited stuff on dual boot on one machine, but elsewhere I’m going Linux only

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the biggest case of planned obsolescence you've dealt with?
10·1 month agoMy Chevy Volt 2013, which still runs great, no longer has OnStar because they never planned for a way to upgrade the connectivity when 3G networks were retired. So I am concretely less safe when driving and lose other useful features like remote start, milage tracking, etc.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something you can see, hear, smell, etc., that others can't?
2·2 months agoIdk if it’s rare, but my wife thinks it’s weird that I can smell on the breeze if we are near a winery. It’s kind of an astringent smell

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What youtuber do you think had the biggest downfall?
2·3 months agoNot really a YouTuber but I’ve always been curious what happened about a decade ago with Chris Ziegler from The Verge, who was an editor but then accepted a job at Apple on the side, and was then fired by both companies. He then disappeared entirely from the record and everyone got real quiet about it.

1·6 months agoWhy is it trash? And it hasn’t been posted on this community before
I am not one to force monogamy on people, though I personally am not interested in being with anyone but my partner. That being said, I think it’s wrong for anyone to violate a partner’s trust. I find it messed up that your high school peer bragged about betraying someone who she claimed to care about (at the time). In a nutshell, it seems like it would be good for society if we got over our puritanical zeal for enforcing monogamy, since some people clearly are wired to need multiple physical partners while still wanting to emotionally connect to one person. But I personally would continue to only be with my chosen partner.

Firefox@lemmy.ml•You asked, we built it: Firefox tab groups are here | The Mozilla Blog
2·9 months agoPretty much every update screws up my config these days, but it’s good because it means they’re actually working on improving the interface

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What books would you describe as nothing burger?
1·9 months agoYeah, I couldn’t get through it. Even as an audiobook read by Wil Wheaton

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are inexpensive staples in your country?
31·10 months agoAs an American, it used to be fossil fuels. I’d go elsewhere and it’d be 3x the price. But lately we seem to be catching up. One thing where we’re still likely cheaper are high-end electronics. At least, it looks like the iPhone is still cheaper in the US than almost anywhere else. I remember living abroad a few years ago, colleagues would ask if I could buy an iPhone or Mac on Christmas break and bring it back to them lol

Environmental Scientist. As my username suggests, my passion is studying bivalves. My day job involves studying nutrient cycling in San Francisco Bay (where clams come up quite a bit)! Through my work, I have also grown fascinated by phytoplankton
The perplexing thing is that unlike Thunderbird, I have never seen them ask for donations

Linux@lemmy.ml•Debian is Ditching X (Twitter) Citing These Reasons
22·1 year agoIt is depressing, but I try not to forget we are seeing a sort of survivorship bias of stupidity on the former Twitter at this point. The cohort of remaining posting accounts is dumber and dumber on average. And this dynamic is magnified in the replies, because they are paid blue accounts at the top. Eg, self-selected losers. (The top account has likely just hidden their checkmark)
Edit: PS, are you still using Nitter? I thought it had died?

Technology@lemmy.ml•The Pebble smartwatch is making a comeback. Google has open-sourced the Pebble software, which means anyone — including Pebble’s founder — can make one.
9·1 year agoThis is interesting timing! I was considering trading in my Pebble Time, since Samsung was running one of their “trade in any smartwatch, any condition” deals. But I couldn’t do it. I found myself reconnecting the watch and setting it up to connect to the third party Rebble servers and putting apps on it like the old days. It’s remarkable how well this device aged, and its interface is still so much more fun and endearing than anything WearOS can offer. So I wish them the best!
