That relies on donations which may or may not come. I understand in a perfect world that makes sense, but in the real world even those foundations often rely on corporate muscle. Without that enterprise money, I’m not sure how they’d stand.

This is probably a minority opinion, but I think OSS prospers most when there is corporate muscle behind it.
A company with paid engineers that puts engineering time into fixing and bettering open source software can possibly be a good company.
Closed source ends up being the worst of all worlds. If there is an issue, you’re stuck waiting for someone else to possibly fix it. At least in open source, either you can try to fix it, or you can pay someone else to try to fix it.
At the end of the day, I think a lot of the Linux success actually comes down to this.

There was talk that the next version of Android will have a full terminal with some sort of Linux emulation. Would be cool if that allowed running the Linux version natively.

I might be misunderstanding the licenses so correct me if wrong.
Can companies use GPL code internally without release as long as the thing written with it doesn’t get directly released to the public?
… or does GPL pollute everything even if used internally for commercial purposes?
What is the data used to freeze your credit? Why couldn’t a bad actor with your SSN unfreeze it?
Edit: I just froze with the big 3 credit agencies. It took name, address, phone number, email, SSN, birthday.
So all the stuff that leaks. Why do people think this provides security if a bad actor has the same data to unfreeze?

Lots of people are also likely to not have any idea about the situation and just think their PC crashes or acts up more. More of these issues can pop up over time.
A recall forces them to notify customers of the issue so the customer can act on it.
csm10495@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.ml•Intel confirms no recall for Raptor Lake CPUs, microcode won’t fix affected unitsEnglish27·9 months agoIf the product has issues it should be legally required to either have a warranty extension, recall, or both. Heck they shouldn’t be selling more units until it’s figured out and patched.
It’s absurd to say: “it might have problems but we’ll keep selling it as is”.
We have safety recalls. There should be product degregation recalls.

I mean if everything works for you on this version, why rock the boat? The idea is supposed to be security, fixes, and new features. We can throw out new features and fixes if you’re happy with everything as is.
Security is very buzzy and kind of vague to this type of user, but they also probably don’t tread far off from popular (likely … hopefully … safe) websites.
So hmm, if not accessing unsafe websites, and hidden behind a router NAT, and with physical safety of home, I wonder if the benefit of rocking the boat (and getting more ads and crap) is worth it.
Like definitely risks are there for any internet connected device but weighing it would be interesting. Someone in infosec should do a real analysis of this situation.

csm10495@sh.itjust.worksto Privacy@lemmy.ml•How do you take deliveries anonymously?English21·1 year agoIt’s public knowledge. If they want to know where you personally live, they could look it up via the ways I previously mentioned.
Heck, even if you never visit their sites, they could easily get big lists of names and addresses that may include you: all legally.
Any attempt at fighting that is likely not to be fruitful. It’s basically security by obscurity, you’re trying to complicate it via one way, but they can just go another (more obvious) way if they wanted.
csm10495@sh.itjust.worksto Privacy@lemmy.ml•How do you take deliveries anonymously?English161·1 year agoI hate to be the bearer of bad news, but most people can lookup most other people’s addresses in the US for free (or cheaply) on websites like whitepages.com. Even without that, if someone is very determined, they can visit the record office for the area on get public info on you, which also likely includes address.
What’s the benefit of paying such a premium for an anonymous delivery if your address is likely already available?
The only thing I can think of is if buying something sketchy, but I’m genuinely curious here.
A true shitpost.
