I looked it up; NETGEAR actually does quite a lot of analytic collection from their customers’ devices. They collect IP addresses, geolocation, how often you use the firewall and what you use the hardware for, what channels your Wi-Fi is set to, and what devices are connected to it.

If they’re relying on Cursor or whatever LLM system they’re using to get this number, then it’s probably heavily inflated. Also, it’s likely a good chunk of that is new tests

That’s how it’s always been though? If the general price is too high odds are people will look elsewhere, no matter how many great coupons there are. To make the difference you’d have to peddle thousands or hundreds of thousands of individualized discounts and fundamentally change consumer behaviors. Technology that is at odds with how humans function often fails

This is far too low in this context. Perhaps it should be a percentage of annual revenue or profit or something instead of a fixed amount.

It seems very easy to badly design a smart home though. For example adding devices to an ecosystem using your personal email. When selling the house you’d have to remove all devices and have the new owners set up everything again one by one. Seems unavoidable until better transfer tools exist OR linking everything to a “house email” OR having everything local and leaving behind the server

If the footage has left your premises and stored on someone else’s machine (the cloud), it’s now out of your control. It could be accessed by an employee, accidentally deleted/tampered, or handed over to a government entity without your knowledge. This applies to any brand of security cameras as well as file storage providers and even VPNs

When motivated enough, governments can and do seize servers from data centers. A lot of the time companies rent them, so these vendors can’t even directly guarantee their physical safety
