This is because we badly want the shit China makes while they don’t want anything we make
That’s not entirely true. China produces a lot of low-margin industrial goods that Americans then assemble into finished products. Americans produce an assortment of agricultural and mineral goods that are in high demand in China (oilseeds and grains, particularly soybeans, followed by mineral fuels and oil). We also produce a number of high-margin technology components (include aircraft and parts, electrical machinery and TV parts, and nuclear reactor parts and mechanical appliances) that are expensive but comparatively smaller by volume than the products China sends our way.
Think of it this way. If China sends us a pound of feathers and we send them a pound of iron, even if they’re the same price one of them is going to fill up a shipping container a lot faster than the other. The end result is a net positive number of shipping containers coming into the US.
Anyone who think this represents economic weakness on China’s part is batshit crazy.
It’s a generally symbiotic relationship and one that any neoliberal economist would laud. We’ve stratified our industrial economies such that we’re highly specialized in respective fields. It isn’t weakness on either side’s part any more than the heart is stronger/weaker than the lungs because one beats faster than the other breaths.
I thought it was the Chinese AI we had to worry about. But if you hook the Chinese AI to the Chinese Nuclear Reactors… game over man. Game over.
It’s so fucking wild what liberals will simply refuse to acknowledge happened back in 2020. And it could easily be argued that 2024 was even more blatantly and flagrantly the result of corrupt backroom dealings, as a sitting President was deposed following a poor debate performance, to be replaced unilaterally by party insiders.

“ACRONYM is an investor in several for-profit companies across the progressive media and technology sectors,” Tharp said. “One of those independent, for-profit companies is Shadow, Inc, which also has other private investors.”
David Plouffe, a former campaign manager to Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential bid who joined Acronym’s board, also distanced himself from the company during an MSNBC panel last night. “I have no knowledge of Shadow,” said Plouffe. “It was news to me.”
But previous statements and internal Acronym documents suggest that the two companies, which share office space in Denver, Colorado, are deeply intertwined.
Last year, McGowan, a co-founder of Acronym, wrote on Twitter that she was “so excited to announce @anotheracronym has acquired Groundbase,” a firm that included “their incredible team led by [Gerard Niemira] + are launching Shadow, a new tech company to build smarter infrastructure for campaigns.” McGowan also noted that “With Shadow, we’re building a new model incentivized by adoption over growth.” The acquisition was announced in mid-January of last year.
In an interview on a related podcast last month, McGowan described Niemira as “the CEO of Shadow, which is the technology company that Acronym is the sole investor in now.”
What’s more, internal documents from Acronym show a close relationship with Shadow. An internal organizational chart shows digital strategy firm Lockwood Strategy, FWIW Media, and Shadow as part of a unified structure, with Acronym staff involved in the trio’s operations.
In an all-staff email sent last Friday, an official with Lockwood Strategy reminded team members about “COOL THINGS HAPPENING AROUND ACRONYM.” The list included bullets points such as, “The Iowa caucus is on Monday, and the Shadow team is hard at work,” and “Shadow is working on scaling up VAN integration with Shadow Messaging for some Iowa caucus clients.” (VAN refers to the widely used Democratic voter file technology firm.) Acronym staffers also attended the Shadow staff retreat.
A person with knowledge of the company’s culture, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, shared communications showing that top officials at the company regularly expressed hostility to Sen. Bernie Sanders’s supporters. McGowan is married to Michael Halle, a senior strategist with the Buttigieg campaign. There is no evidence any preference of candidates had any effect on the coding issue that is stalling the Iowa results.
Andrew Yang also championed hiring a management consulting firm to identify areas of inefficiency in the federal workforce and cut 15–20% of current government workers, assigning KPIs and sunset clauses to all Congressional legislation, and assigning AI life coaches with Oprah’s voice to people in need of marriage counseling.
So, a very mixed bag of ideas. Few of them had a serious implementation behind them. Yang loved to noodle, but failed to explain where the novel technologies and extra-constitutional authorities would come from.
The difference between Donald Trump and the rest of us is that Trump could borrow a billion, lose it, and borrow another billion.
None of us are ever seeing that kind of credit. What we get is almost always worse than the ROI, thanks to double or even triple digit interest rates.
Which is crazy considering we got Captain Planet under Ronald Reagan
You couldn’t make Inglorious Bastards today. On account of the Woke.
Thing about these pipelines is that they’re very expensive to maintain and manage. When the price of fuel drops under $60/bbl, the owners of these projects simply do not give a fuck about leaks. Balkan crude only breaks even at $85/bbl anyway, so any residual leaking out of the pipes is just your neighbors get to pay for all the “prosperity” the pipe brings in.
Isn’t Trump more of a Yeltsin?
American Exceptionalism, Baby!
No no no. None of this should be acknowledged, because Whataboutism.
If you’re a US citizen, resist.
Easier said than done. There’s no clear point of leverage for people to lean into. The cops are ruthless. The liberal opposition is toothless and lame. People don’t really trust one another. There’s a strong attitude of “I’m just going to keep my head down until it blows over”. But we’re not even really in a crisis per-say, just yet. Trump’s a fucking menace, but the economy is strong and we’re not currently at the peak of a pandemic and there’s no hurricane about to decimate a random corner of the Gulf/Atlantic Coast.
I suspect we’ll see more points of galvanized opposition when the winds change. But for now, looks like Americans are going to lay back and think of England.
Hard to get an unbiased answer on a question of subjective experience.
I’ve seen a new vim and vigor in my local Houston PD’s crusade to ruin the lives of homeless people. I have to assume folks in ethnic and religious minority neighborhoods, LGBTQ communities, and anyone easily designated as “Woke” are have it particularly hard right now.
But if you’re just some white-cheeked, white-collar, middle-class schlub, things haven’t meaningfully changed.
They should ask again when we’re in the grip of a Bird Flu epidemic or another Tech Sector crash. But for now, life drags on in America not all that much different than under the last regime.
Wrestle with a pig and you’ll both get muddy, but only the pig will enjoy it.
Christian Nationalists long ago mastered parsing out the bits and pieces of the Bible they agree with and butchering anyone who disagreed with them. This is a tradition going back millennia. You’re not going to beat anyone in the Westburo Baptist Church at a game where the rules boil down to “Fuck You Heretic, I win”.
Old enough to remember libertarians who were smugly asserting Social Security caused the Iraq War.
Now we’re stuck with the libertarians who smugly assert that the Department of Education causes transgender teenagers.
Showing up in Midgard just in time for the Plate in Sector 7 to collapse on my head.
we are still many years from discovering the Epstein drive
If only he’d had a little more time to continue his research.
