That’s what I do. But then I mostly use Arch or Arch based distros (e.g. EndeavourOS). So I have access to AUR. If something isn’t on AUR (very rare, but can happen), I just create the package for it and publish to AUR. I do use some AlmaLinux machines as server. I don’t really need many programs outside of the standard repos there since I use them mostly for hosting Docker images. But if I do need to install something like that, I’ve some self-written LURE install scripts.

Better start looking for a new job. That company might not be in business for too long, judging from the choices that they’re making. Especially, if they work in the IT space.
There are sometimes reason to use it. It’s shorter, so easier to remember. It’s also easier to send in text. I use a selfhosted shortener, so I can use these as dynamic links and can change the target if I need to while keeping the shortlink the same. But I agree that most don’t use it for respectable reasons.

You can send them directly to an eReader. I personally just get a copy with DRM and de-DRM it before copying it to my Kobo using Calibre.

We never had any issues or arguments, but he simply won’t reply to me or return my calls. After a while, I gave up. We had been friends for about 7 years at that point.

The first thing obviously was to make sure he survived. We don’t live in the same city, so that was a very long and stressful day for me. Fortunately, we have mutual friends who I could reach. (I was the only one he texted before the attempt.)
Anyway, after he was well, I never really pressured him to talk about it. I, and others, convinced him to talk to a therapist. After I believe a week or so, he just randomly opened up and we talked for hours. This happened a few times. But I always tried to not pressure him into opening up, and kept our friendly banter and everything. I never wanted him to feel that something between us changed because he tried to take that route. I’ll still call him names and roast him, and he’ll clap back. That’s just our dynamic. I think people often overcompensate, and end up making things worse.
That paragraph turned out to be much less structured than I had hoped. It’s just hard to put into words what to do. I guess, just try to be a good friend. Whatever that means for you. Be there for them. Talk to them. Don’t pressure or guilt them into doing anything. Don’t guilt yourself into behaving differently. Be compassionate if they do open up, but don’t force them. Just be like you usually are, grab a drink maybe, and have a good time with them.

Beauty and terror
Just keep going

– Rainer Maria RilkeThis was used at the end of the movie Jojo Rabbit (one of my favorite movies btw). I often remember this line when I feel like everything is going wrong. It helps me hold on to hope.

ѕєχυαℓ ρσℓутσρє@lemmy.sdf.orgto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are your favorite shows and why?15·7 months agoBetter Call Saul. I find it so amazing how they were able to take an existing (brilliant in its own right) story, and extend it in both past and the future. It fits in so nicely. There are very few (if any) plot holes, and the story is enjoyable in its own right. Add to that the superb acting of almost everyone, and the elite cinematography. I don’t think there’s a single aspect of this show that I don’t like.

I’ve stopped talking to Zoomers about tech completely. If I try to help, I end up confusing them more, and I don’t like to simply solve shit for them because then they start bugging me for every single thing. (I’m also technically a Zoomer, but barely.)
