I guess Ubuntu? 10 years ago or even more? can’t remember… Tried it for a bit but didn’t stick at first and went back to Windows until 2020.
Installed my first homelab and selfhosted application on my old spare laptop with Debian (only over command line).
So I gave Linux desktop another try… Ubuntu for a few days => Manjaro for a few days => EndeavourOS !
Got hooked and are now a proud EOS user for about 3 years and never will I look back into Windows !
I’m still in the learning process, but in the long run I will probably switch to bare bone Arch.
N0x0n@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•Is KDE actually good or it is overrated? Or I was just unlucky because of prebuilt distros?2·4 days agoThe question marks are because I read somethere that Linus himself doesn’t see it like an issue by itself but more like a feature? And that’s why it hasn’t been resolved for soo long ! I can’t exactly remember what he said but that’s the gist !
But I do agree, I also see it as an issue :/ and most people who aren’t aware probably fucked up some USB sticks that way…
N0x0n@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•Is KDE actually good or it is overrated? Or I was just unlucky because of prebuilt distros?3·4 days ago- Copy 1Gb movie to flash drive, says it’s done in 10 seconds. Try to remove the flash drive, still in use. Turns out it’s actually still copying.
This is not distro related but GNU/Linux and a known “issue” for over decades ! Everything gets into you ram memory and gets dumped from there into your USB storage device.
watch grep -e Dirty: -e Writeback: /proc/meminfo
A long term solution would like to write a udev rule something like here:

That’s so true and do agree on that ! But just beeing happy with breadcrums is something we experience like forever?
It’s way to slow and people are way to much brainfucked by big tech/GAFAMs and other shit…
So yeah, put your happy face mask on but don’t rejoice until we actually win somthing…

:/

Dickfingerprinting !
Yeah can’t argue against that, never tried NixOS !
Yeaaaah !! I 100% agree on that ! However, this is a steep learning curve and sometimes a lot of tweaking/reading !
My pops just want to copy past a crack and execute… Yeah, I know…
I can’t stand seeing my father struggling with windows…I tried to make him switch, but he has old piracy blood in him and just want Windows things and pirated software, some which do not have any alternatives on Linux.
Also, he’s getting old and he always talks about he don’t want to relearn a whole system. But everytime we see each other and talk about computers he trash talks how bad windows is…
Maybe that’s just something he needs… And boring distros are going to make him depressed? Dunno
Sorry for the story time, but you switching fully to linux made me think of my Dad in hope sometimes he will also take the steps to get out of there 😅!
I’ve found it can be easier to manage what you have installed, since you can just look at that list and go “oh, why do I still have xyz installed, idek what that does anymore”
While it sounds sexy and attractive… Not sure the amount of time needed to configure your NixOS is worthwhile. (Except if you have time to spare and want that learning experience !)
Just put everyhting In your personal notes and you have a similar “feature”?
Because they don’t fix a 5 years old bug about LVMs? instead they write a post on how to drop support for it?
Right now you have to do some sketchy bug/workaround to make it work with LVM…
So yeah drop calamares, hello new installer :)
That’s great ! Is there any chance we will switch to Agama instead of Calamares? Cause instead of fixing the LVM installation issue they just drop the support…
Oh wow look at that beautiful website that made uBlock shine like a Christmas Tree ! What a beautiful specimen !
+1 ! Need to work on my morning Lemmy scrolling… Grumpy as fuck and not being nice to people sucks :// !
Yeah ! Except in the dev/code realm… They seem very aggressive to each other, specially if you whisper something like: Rust is safer than C !
I don’t really get it, but I find It very pleasant to read when passionate people write a whole essay I don’t even understand 1/10 of what they are writing… However, there seems some heated negativity in that community !
Even better, self-host Vaultwarden !
- Works everywhere (android, iOS, linux, windows, macOS…)
- TOTP
- Works without connection and if the instance is offline.
- Add notes, customize URI…
- password/username/passphrase generator
- …
A lot more to it :)
N0x0n@lemmy.mlto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are people in the US aware that they are now definitely a rogue state, or is this fact covered up by the usual patriotism somehow?2·26 days agoProbably something to do with money? Just a guess 🤷♂️
There’s also a third possibility most people ignore for what ever reason…
Speech-to-text and send to servers. No need for heavy CPU usage that way and don’t need to send MBs of Audio files…
With the technology we have today it’s easier than ever before… “colgate” and give you right into your face an ad for toothpaste !
No need for audio or complex processing. All new models come even with AI processor units… Haha ! What a joke !
