Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.caOPto Memes@lemmy.ml•MRW my meme complaining about a sexist trope is removed for being sexistEnglish7·4 months agoYeah. Like, maybe I’m misinterpreting the ruling, but it sure seems like the mod thought the meme was sexist. For the life of me I just cannot understand that perspective. I was trying to explain my feelings towards the trope in a way that I hoped relatable or understandable to the common person. That’s what memes are for, lol.
In the original R&M scene Rick is literally the villain. He abuses his power of creation to make a machine seemingly capable of independent thought and feelings, and then condemns it to a menial existence. The humor is derived from empathizing with the poor little guy. That feels like a perfect metaphor for the refrigerator trope to me.
I could have instead posted a purely academic analysis of the trope, but that’s not exactly a meme is it?

If you sexist a sexist then the number of sexists remains the same.

Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.caOPto Memes@lemmy.ml•MRW my meme complaining about a sexist trope is removed for being sexistEnglish201·4 months agoThe Modlog says
lemmy.ml rules 1 and 2 (i think you intend to be criticising this trope, but you’re also using it as a punchline)
Rules 1 and 2 are
Rule 1: No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia. Code of Conduct.
Rule 2: Be respectful, especially when disagreeing. Everyone should feel welcome here.
I made a Rick and Morty butter robot meme. Rick was representing “Authors and Writers” while the robot represented “Strong Female Characters”. Rick told the robot to “get in the refrigerator” in reference to the Women in Refrigerators trope.
You could maybe argue that the meme is an example of the trope, but you’d have to be bad at memes or arguing.

Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.caOPto Books@lemmy.ml•Why do so many authors think the moon rises/sets during the night?English9·8 months agoAh, got me there. Thanks for the info!
My main point, that moon rise and set don’t bookend nighttime, still stands. I was just arguing with the wrong deets. 1:34 am and 5:20 pm are not the start and end of the night. I’ll edit my post to better reflect reality in a bit.
Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.cato Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are there any occupations you uniquely oppose the existence of?English40·8 months agoHuman Cannonball
Hear me out: Many circus performers are multi disciplined, or put on an incredible display of training and talent. The last big top I went to had a knife throwing couple who also did a fantastic roller skating routine, a few very talented clowns/jugglers, and a bike troupe in a ball of death. Just to name a few. These people have devoted days or years of their lives to their craft. Do you know how hard it is to ride a bicycle across a tight rope with someone on your shoulders?
The Human Cannonball? He got launched out of the cannon and did one flip before getting caught by the net. That’s all he did that night, yet he came out and bowed with the rest of the performers like he was an equal contributor.
Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.cato Gaming@beehaw.org•Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of May 5thEnglish2·1 year agoI’m playing the ninja platformer N++. I’m probably not good enough to 100% it, but I’m having a blast with it.
Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.cato 3D Printing@lemmy.ml•Forgot plate, damaged printing bed. How fucked am I?English61·1 year agoOof. It looks like you need to recalibrate your z height. Your print head went pretty deep there.
I’m not the biggest 3D printer person, but that looks like it’s just copper or something? It could just be a heat transfer layer to even out the heat distribution. If so, you should be fine. That area may come out a bit warped at worst, but the damage seems small. Do wait for more responses maybe, as I am not an expert.
You could also try printing again with the plate installed and see what happens. They do sell replacement parts online too.

Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.cato Gaming@beehaw.org•Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of November 12thEnglish6·2 years agoEvery November I play Dishonored. Just finished the main game, and now I’m playing the Knife of Dunwall DLC. Next will be Brigmore Witches, and then it’s on to Dishonored 2. I love these games yo.
Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.cato Gaming@beehaw.org•Capcom President Says ‘Game Prices Are Too Low’English21·2 years agoI still play Dishonored every year. Those are not realistic graphics in the slightest, but it still holds up pretty well. Why? Style. I would 100% take a “lower” graphics game with style than a 100GB game with exquisitely modeled sandwiches.
Stylistic games also age better than realistic games in my opinion. Look at other 2012 games like Mass Effect, Far Cry 3, and Borderlands. Mass Effect and Far Cry went more realistic, and I think they suffered a bit for it in the long run.
Not saying Dishonored didn’t age tho. It does have that 2012 feel, lol.
Honestly, a bit ESH. The temp was out of line shoving everything on the floor. I can understand being upset by misgendering, but it doesn’t warrant an immediate tantrum. Even if you were a hateful douche about it it doesn’t mean they should ruin the coffee and doughnuts for everyone.
I don’t think you were wrong to say dude. Unless you really emphasize the “dude” I think it’s a perfectly casual way to address people. Modern usage has it shifting more towards “cool person” instead of just “cool guy”.
I do think the “nobody cares” part was a bit insensitive though. I don’t know where you are, but tensions in North America are high right now regarding trans rights (not saying this person was trans, as there’s not enough info in the story). Lots of people care a whole lot more than they should about other people’s chosen gender expression, so it’s a touchy subject. I can understand that maybe you were coming from a place of “I don’t mind one way or the other”, but I don’t think that’s what it sounded like in the context. Especially with the “stupid” part thrown in.
I was involved in a very vicious street fight. It was incredibly violent and frantic, with blood everywhere. It was more of a free for all instead of me taking on like nine dudes. I’m not a violent person at all, so it was really distressing. Some big guy lifted me up and slammed me against a wall, so I reached out and gouged his eye with my thumb. It was awful. I could feel the shape, and it was all clammy. It was so against my regular self that I burst awake. I thought it was still going on though because I could still feel it on my thumb. Turns out my hand was in my shorts, and the clammy eyeball shape was a part of my male anatomy.
