This sounds even more dumber and pretentious.

True, I have 3 book lights scrambled at different rooms in my home, and still managed to forget all of them for a recent trip.
But the only more modern reader I’ve used (Onyx boox, white backlight) did its job at night, but still felt a bit straining for my eyes. Maybe it gets better with a yellow-ish or orange backlight, these feel better for me on the clip-on lights, but I haven’t tried one for backlight.
There are snap-on small lights that would illuminate the Kindle screen, rather than glow in your eyes. People used to read books too without a backlight through various ways.

26·9 months agoNice advertising campaign for DDG. But I really respect search engines that do give you a choice whether to use AI or not, and decide other options under their hood. So good for them.
Doesn’t getting an API key defeat the purpose of “no tracking”? Genuinely asking, don’t know much about this, but intuition points me they will be able to track you by API key used then.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Terminal promiser Elon Musk says he'll make a great AI game in 2026
1·1 year agoDidn’t read the article, didn’t upvote the post, and don’t imagine people cursing him in the comments bothered to that, too. So we kept engagement to a minimum and to just hurl some profanities at him, the skies, or whoever reads. It helps to calm the nerves after another spotting in the news. I long for the moment when he reaches his Howard-Hughes-locked-in-a-hotel-room phase.

4·1 year agoI can imagine him livestreaming it already, singing songs of praise about it, while playing completely alone (or to a small audience of sicophants).
Anyway idgaf what ElRon is doing with his time, as long as it doesn’t affect me and other people.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What movie did you see too young that still haunts you to this day?
7·1 year ago“Akira” when I was 10-ish. Wanted to check what this anime thing was about, was not prepared for nuclear blasts, and people becoming giant body-horror amoebas. Still, it was a good intro into anime, along with Dominion Tank Police (another hilariously not-for-10-year-olds number). And set the bar way too high for most other ones I watched later.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•We all know grammar Nazis. What incorrect grammar are you completely in defence of?
2·1 year agoFor me in American English it’s also the commas that go inside the closing quotation marks, even when they’re not part the original quote. I die a little every time I see this, so illogical.
If it’s not part of the quote, just leave it outside.

1·2 years agoWell, on a screen so small, you’d always be limited in what can be shown. I definitely can add events to my Calendar on Galaxy Watch 6 though, the problem is if I’d ever want to do it from the watch or check them on it. I use it for reminders and notifications checking mostly, personally.
Maybe it’s way more usable with Bixby or other voice assistants, but I’m really put off by the privacy and battery-draining aspects of those.

I also like some of the films, so I tired to read “The Stand” as it was one of his more lauded books. My mistake was buying some anniversary edition which came in two tomes and was apparently a longer uncut version the author had initially written, that was then edited down to the produce the initial release.
Couldn’t finish even half of the first tome. King writes good, but loooves to write a lot. I quickly understood why the classic version of the book was cut down so much - I was screaming for all this exposition to cut to the action finally, and it just didn’t come, always being teased as being behind the corner.
Also I found out that as any classic his style has been immitated so much in literature and other media, that by now I’ve basically consumed a ton of Stephen King-like stories and I really don’t get much more from reading his books. So I just gave up on that front, while appreciating him as an author and perpetuum-idea-generator.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What’s the worst piece of technology you’ve ever owned?
2·2 years agoOh, remember the good old Nexus 7. Had only a fraction of its performance 1-2 years down the line…
Meanwhile, my Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2016 still soldiers on with good performance, even if it hasn’t gotten updates in half a decade, and its internal 16GB space is beyond ridiculously small for today’s standards and has to be cleaned up revery few months.
I guess I just felt that “right” is my stronger hand direction, “left” is my weaker hand one. Now, after several years of recovery I feel it almost the same way as before, so my mind makes the same shortcut instead of thinking for a second about it. But if I ever feel the balance of my stronger-weaker side tipped (e.g. right hand has fallen asleep) I guess it’s thinking time again.

You’re the perfect customer to buy a Corolla! 😄
Sadly all those assist features come standard now even on the lowest trim, but I think you can easily disable them from options, bar the reverse camera. Plus, at least on my 2020 software one, they’re not always-on, I think the lane-assist and cruise-control have to be turned on by a button, I use them only on longer trips.
Only the auto-breaking part I’m not sure if it can be disabled, but it doesn’t work in lower speeds, so it’s as good as not there in less intensive situations.
