Thick (~1m) mudbrick walls. I lived in a house like that for 2 years, it felt cold inside in summer.

zemon@lemmy.mlto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•does anyone else’s family think their ambitions/goals are “stupid”?10·1 month agoYup. I’ve been listening to ‘You shouldn’t be an astronomer, you can’t make money as one’. Now I work at the state railways, I constantly have myself sent to school like driving a maintenance engine. You guessed right right I also got the ‘don’t work at the railways’. There’s not much of my family I contact these days.
Debian for me and Linux Mint Debian Edition for anyone I help with computers, because I don’t want to configure a system more than once and to investigate why some stuff doesn’t work.
Wait. What does genders have to do with a language??? Várj csak. Mi köze a nemeknek a nyelvhez???
What ads? I use Firefox and its forks and I haven’t seen an ad.

I’ve never seen such a great movie. The plot: a bunch of techers talking. That’s it. But that talk is mindblowing.

It asked the best questions and showed how easy it is to die on a super advanced spaceship if there isn’t fresh air and clean water. A shame it is discontinued.
zemon@lemmy.mlto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What language do you find the most seductive, and what about it makes you feel that way?2·2 years agoTurkish. The same goes for it, try listening something. I really enjoy Almora.
Edit: te is magyar vagy?
Idk either, but I can confirm it still works. I have a Nokia with Android one.

A sysadmin couldn’t install a Debian server, because the internet was unavailable. There were 2 net cards in the machine (either had an interface twice the size of the PCI slot it was sitting in, the other was regular PCI). My dear mentor put the LAN cable into the regular card, the told the installer to use the other. I told him to finish my work and installed the server for him.
Same sysadmin told me to graft two CAT5e cables. I wired a small cable (10 cm), starting with green-white at both ends, then grefted the two cables with it. Later he complained, that I made a crossed wiring, because the other cables started with orage-white. I couldn’t explain, if you double-cross a wire it becomes a straight one. Then I told him, that modern routers configure themsefves, no matter how messed up the wiring.
At another company there were 3 pieces of free antivirus on every PC. A onedrive (free) account was our cloud service. The boss wanted me to teach the store manager how to develop a website and I had one week to do that, that was my last week.

I work at the railways as an overhead line mechanic.
I use Swisscows and Metager, and usually find what I need, if I don’t I retry the query with Startpage.
zemon@lemmy.mlto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What book are you in the middle of reading right now?English1·2 years agoKazohinia by Sándor Szathmári. It’s a fun double dystopia, especially fun once you recognize our own world.
zemon@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?2·2 years agoIt was 2009 and I was 14. I had been using Ubuntu on my father’s PC for a year and I installed Andromeda Linux (an Ubuntu fork with a stunning theme), completely wiping my HDD. The next day I installed Windows and attempted my second Linux install, I was more careful and got a doual boot working.
zemon@lemmy.mlto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you have a favorite book or movie that has made a lasting impact on you? If so, what is it and why did it resonate with you?3·2 years agoBook: Kazohinia. It describes human beings very well. What we do to each other and why, how could we make better and why we aren’t better. Movie: The Man from Earth. The plot of the move is 7-8 people talking in a living room. That’s it, but it’s more interesting than most movies I’ve ever seen. It don’t want to spoil it to anyone, but it shares deep thoughts.
Andromeda Linux around 2009. It had cool astronomy based theme and animation.
