honestly mint really a very easy distro, I enjoyed using it too. Fedora and other distros also seem pretty cool

Linux Mint is a nice and easy distro that seems quite good :D
sbird@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•Please support this! As graphic designers we should be able to use a open source OS.English11·12 days agohonestly inkscape is great :D I switched from illustrator after my adobe creative cloud subscription expired, and it’s been an easy transition!
sbird@lemmy.worldto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is there a third party YouTube client that supports DeArrow and actually works nowadays?English2·16 days agoMaterialious has DeArrow, but apparently only the desktop and Android clients work. The web client is blocked by YT unfortunately :(
I like floorp, you can put the tab bar on the top, side, or even the bottom (I like that as it keeps it close to the taskbar)! Rhe UI is very customisable and I like it :D
oh that’s sad. I mostly switched out of proton bc I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket. Also, not having IMAP sucksss because both the official proton and tuta apps are SLOW
also, check out some of the firefox forks. I personally really like Floorp since it lets me put the tab bar at the bottom and customise the UI! Librewolf is also decent but some of its privacy anti-fingerprinting stuff makes it a bit annoying to use
onlyoffice is also a pretty good option for ms office compatibility
i think he wants a rec for a linux distro
gmail -> proton or tuta if you don’t care about IMAP, or any other decent email provider (I use disroot, I set my brother up with mailfence, they both seem quite good. I use them with thunderbird) pycharm -> not an IDE, but I like VSCodium (vscode without MS)

yk, fair enough. if you like it, that’s fine by me
yep, the app is SLOW
I’ve tried tuta before. It seems pretty okay, but it doesn’t support IMAP meaning you have to use their app, and (at least for me) it was SLOW.
I personally use disroot, but there’s loads of other options, like mailfence seems like a decent alternative. Just pick one that supports IMAP
sbird@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What apps have you tried to "de-google" yourself?English11·1 month agofor me:
- google drive > pcloud (objectively better app tbh)
- chrome > librewolf > floorp (i like having the tab bar at the bottom, and librewolf is a bit annoying sometimes)
- photos > ente
- gmail > proton > tuta > “disroot” (proton and tuta aren’t IMAP, and their first-party apps are slow. disroot probably isn’t the best one, I just chose one that supports IMAP)
- google search > ddg > SearXNG
- google office > onlyoffice on windows, libreoffice on linux
- google maps > Organic Maps
- google passwords > bitwarden
- google auth > ente auth :)

I use floorp (firefox fork) because I like having the tabs at the bottom. Makes them closer to the taskbar and a bit easier to navigate.
sbird@lemmy.worldOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•I've made BestOf, a repository of the best things in their respective categories!11·2 months agoThanks for the criticism! yeah, there is definitely heavy bias in this. I’ll try to add some description to why I chose what I chose. I think I did that well when it comes to the “devices” section (I have written the specs of some of the laptops and compared them based on that) but yeah you’re right I definitely need to improve on that.
Screenshots of the programs are a good idea too. A lot of the desktop and phone apps were mostly based on my experiences with them and I agree that it’s definitely quite biased. Maybe I could extend bestof into being a review site as well, that would be kind of cool and interesting.
oh, and also, bestof isn’t yet another suggestion repo, my idea is that it covers a whole lot of different topics from clothing to smart home tech to 3d printers. I’ve got the breadth of content, but need more depth, as you said! Again, thank you for your time to respond, really appreciate it!
Linux Mint XFCE, it was easy to setup and could run on my really old laptop.
