exactly. thank you. this is the whole impetus for the conversation of what happens to Firefox and consequently its forks.

underlying assumptions:

• many privacy-minded users use Firefox forks on desktop and possibly mobile. Without Mozilla the organization, said forks may or may not be able to continue individually on their own. However, it seems hard to argue that they would fare better if a “main” Firefox continued, possibly under the umbrella of some pre-existing group like Canonical or Linux Foundation. Better yet if Mozilla were to reverse course from its user data cash-in moves and increase its long-term stability.

like you said, i actually was thinking of them capturing about 5-10% more of the market. i think that would be a significant and worthy goal. it’s enough to increase interest from potential large donors, at least slightly.

I’ve been feeling that they were getting ready to turn FF into something more commercial, and if that didn’t stabilize/increase funding enough, to shut it down entirely. so a slight and sustainable increase of users and funding is the best near term outcome, in my mind.

i thought Firefox translator didn’t have and East/Southeast Asian languages besides Vietnamese (because of Roman characters) so far

apparently Uk govt has never played watch dogs legion, nor seen Equilibrium (C Bale movie), nor Minority Report, nor Richard III, nor read Brave New World, nor the billion other movies, novels, games, poems, songs, Banksy art, social videos, cave paintings, etc that specifically warned UK not to (re)become the villain (over and over again)

i think OP is implying the extra time that will be needed on foss volunteers part to review the code at the time [edit: ‘of’] release.

it’s like pouring liquid into a flimsy plastic cup. drop by drop, the cup can handle it. pour a lot all at once and the cup may tip over and spill.

i know that some people haven’t had the level of negative experiences ive had with comments/replies. maybe it’s reddit baggage.

like i said, nothing against peertube.

sorry to anyone if my grievance wasn’t clear.

the problem is:

1. auto translated video titles make many videos seem like they’re in my language (either of my 2 fluent languages) but in fact the video is not -> ai generated title fraud
2. auto generated translated audio track -> don’t like dubs, from humans or not. if i watch a video in a language i don’t understand, i want the original audio and subtitles. always.
3. auto generated subtitles appear even when there is no talking, i.e. during sound effects or music (even instrumental)

root causes:

• ai translation is incompetent thus far and for the foreseeable future. (please don’t mention “good” ai translation between western European languages. Compared to the rest of the world these may as well be slight accents of the same language, especially but not limited to Romance<-> Romance, Germanic<->Germanic, English<->Germanic/Romance)
• YouTube corporation thinks multilingual audience don’t exist, i.e. thinks everyone only wants audio/subtitles in the settings’ selected 1 (one) language. no option to select multi languages.
• ai translated audio track can only be disabled per video during playback. no option in settings screen to disable ai generated audio (on watcher side). maybe this is Freetube issue, not sure cuz i haven’t watched YouTube directly in years.

exactly! there are so many casino/poker tubers, not to mention Thai casino videos, invading the Gaming tab of Trending… it’s outrageous!
