  • Yeah.

I think gumtree is better for different types of items.

My sister is a dog breeder and lists exclusively on gumtree to avoid the idiots on facebook.

The vast majority of stuff bought and sold from our household is low value toddler gear. fb marketplace is awash with that stuff and when you list something for the right price it’s gone by the end of the day. It’s true that there’s some time wasters but you get better at kinda managing the great unwashed.

My partner doesn’t care about the privacy issues and will never delete her fb account so maybe for the time being I can just use her account.

In 12 months or so we will be well past the worst of the “toddler gear” and I’ll be happy to leave fb behind for good.

  • Cops want to brush off stuff that involves protecting people

That’s not my experience here in Australia.

Like in domestic violence situations, even where no serious injuries have occurred, police are fairly pro-active in establishing restraining orders and so on.

The thing is, the police I’ve interacted with are very practical, have limited tools at hand, and tend to work on an if-this-then-that basis. If your situation doesn’t slot in to an established “this” situation then you’re not going to get a “that”.

If I’m really honest, while I’m sympathetic to OPs situation, I don’t really think anyone is in imminent danger. Yes a law has probably been broken but the copper OP spoke to doesn’t have the ability to get the ID of the caller, so there’s not really much of a process for them to follow. They can’t post a couple of cops outside OPs house for the next month just in case he gets into another FB argument.

I don’t say that to be dismissive of OP, just to demonstrate how it appears from their end.

If you don’t actually ask to submit a formal report and obtain a report number then it’s understandable they don’t want to go to the effort to do that either.

  • That’s a generalisation.

We have twins, 2 years old.

With kids there’s loads of “stuff” that just makes the whole ordeal a lot more livable. Being able to buy all that stuff on facebook and re-sell for the same price has saved us a heap of money. Like thousands.

It’s easy to say “oh well you should use whatever alternative platform”, but honestly there’s just no other ready market for this stuff.

  • If he were going to physically harm you or your family in any way, he wouldn’t be harassing you on the phone. He’s legit just trying to scare you.

The best approach here is to “grey rock” him, which in this case just means not answering. You said you don’t use the home phone so just disconnect whatever device. You said your wife has blocked him so that’s sorted. Close your fb account or don’t log in or whatever.

Call the police and make an actual report to get an actual report number. Here any kind of threat made over a “wire service” is a crime. They may not investigate but that’s not the point, in the infinitessimal chance the guy escalates, you want some history.

Refresh home security without going nuts. Maybe a ring door camera, make sure window locks are installed.

Then just go about your life, but maybe avoid throw down arguments on fb.

Edit: don’t buy a ring camera.

  • In most industries contractors actively avoid “discovering” anything of historic value.

In construction for example, if you uncovered an amazing archaeologically significant site, it will be a huge pain in the butt and cost everyone a loads of money due to delays et cetera.

In the case of a shipwreck, it’s not going to be heavily laden with gold bullion you get to keep. It will merely be “interesting” in “enhancing our understanding of 1700s naval operations” or some such. You probably won’t even get credited with the discovery.

The ships equipped for industrial operations at sea like this cost an absolute fortune to operate. They also have contracts lined up months or years into the future. These contracts have crazy financial penalties for delays et cetera. This means any kind of delay in fulfilling a contract can be disasterous.

Additionally, I don’t think much detailed survey work would be done prior to laying cable because that would be preclusively expensive. They would check depth per existing charts, maybe check what the sea floor is composed of geologically speaking. They definitely aren’t sending down remote controlled rovers to check for ship wrecks.

Honestly, I reckon they just steer the boat and spool the cable off the back, pausing momentarily to splice in the next cable when necessary.

If there was a big flashing sign that said “super interesting ship wreck right here” they’d close their eyes and make sure no one on board noticed that.
