  • Interesting that they released Yashin. I wonder if he got asylum from somewhere or if he’s staying in Russia? Neither NPR or The Guardian mentioned anything and I haven’t done any searching yet.

Also, I had no idea who Whelan is so I went and read his wiki page – apparently he’s a former US Marine who got arrested in Russia over charges of espionage. Based on the article I was left with the impression that the charges seem like bullshit, but his FSB buddy thing was, well… pretty weird if nothing else. Apparently he was in Russia for the wedding of a friend who’s also a former Marine, and it somehow struck me as funny that jarheads seem to like Russia

If you think solar panels are the solution to our problems on a “significant” level, you clearly haven’t been paying enough attention and don’t understand the scale of the issues here – and no I’m not going to be the one who has to educate you

What if brain chemistry is just an excuse?

This has to be the single fucking stupidest opinion I’ve seen anyone voice whole year. Jesus fuck, forget anything I said about how I think you mean well, because you clearly don’t. You’re a fucking walking and talking example of the Dunning-Kruger phenomenon who has their head so far up their ass that they think brain chemistry is an excuse, and that your fantastically idiotic opinions clearly mean you’re wiser than the rest of us plebs when you can’t even process the thought that maybe mental illness could affect how much someone exercises. How you manage to function in society without dying of drinking bleach is completely beyond me

Oh yeah they definitely have uses, but there’s a real tendency for people to go a bit crazy with them. Complex regexen aren’t exactly readable, there’s all kinds of fun performance gotchas, there’s sometimes other tools/algorithms that are more suitable for the task, and sometimes people try to use them to eg. parse HTML because they don’t know that it is literally impossible to use regular expressions to parse languages that aren’t regular

  • I’ve had a conservative say essentially that to me but with a straight face. He was also convinced that white, cishet meat eater men are the most oppressed minority (literally what he said).

Parodying conservative opinions is completely impossible nowadays; any quip anybody can come up with will be an actual conservative opinion, pretty much no matter how ridiculously stupid it is.
