Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some common nicknames for names in your country?
11·16 days agoIn Australia, it’s common to shorten names, then add:
- “-o” suffix to names ending with a consonant sound. Thus, David>Dave>Davo, Steven>Steve>Stevo, John>Johnno, Dominique>Dom>Dommo
- “-az” or “-azza” to names ending with, or containing, an “ar” syllable. Gary>Gaz or Gazza, Sharon>Shaz or Shazza, Barry>Bazza
- ”-ie” (“ee” sound) to names ending with a vowel sound (but sometimes with consonant sound too). Stuart>Stew>Stewie, Frank>Frankie, Don>Donnie
I was much happier before I woke up.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What time is your cats' bedtime; is it the same as yours and there is co-sleeping?
7·22 days agoOur cat walks around and yells most of the night. Some nights (not many) he will sleep in the bed with us. He sleeps most of the day.
I am REQUIRED to have an authenticator app to log into work
Do they pay you an allowance to install their app on your private phone? I was using a Nokia 2720 and my employer gave me a hardware token.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•English as a second language learners: what words were really hard for you to pronounce?
7·2 months agoI always pronounced “only” as “on-lie”. I heard other people say “only” and couldn’t understand what they meant.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something you can see, hear, smell, etc., that others can't?
6·2 months agoI’ve been thinking for hours how to describe it.
It’sa sort of echoing scraping noise. A sheet of plywood lying on the ground, being kicked down the road. Only it’s quite faint, I can only hear it when the room is quiet or when I’m trying to get to sleep.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a non-traditional candle scent you would like?
4·3 months agoVegemite. That first heady whiff of yeast and salt when you open a new jar.
I got my (uncommon but not rare) surname and country code, similar to for example smith.uk, so I can have an email address like (but not exactly) john@smith.uk. That’s good enough for me.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you had to choose a new _lingua franca_, what language would you pick?
9·3 months agoLatin, or even better, Klingon

Pink Floyd.
Some of their music is nice to listen to. Some of it is catchy. Most of it is just boring.
