Depends on your frame of reference. When traversing the surface of a globe, your described concept of a straight line isn’t intuitive.

Seeker of Carcosa@feddit.ukto Memes@lemmy.ml•bibme.org wants me to watch a sponsored messageEnglish2·2 years agoIt’s not a necessary tool for all fields. I don’t know your area but mathematics journals have vastly different style guides and citation standards. The best way to handle this is to export a bibtex citation which is just a list of metadata tags, then plug in the journal’s style header before compiling your TeX.
That’s because mathematicians use log for the natural logarithm. Log base 10 would be log_10
The thing I’d be more concerned with is establishing unreal expectations around sex based on overproduced porn. Like, it’s not a normal expectation to fold someone into a pretzel and jackhammer their ass for 30 minutes.
Do you keep restarting or wiping on fights? There simply isn’t 120 hours of content in a single playthrough of act I.
The good old
Narcissist’sTankie’s Prayer:That didn’t happen,
And if it did, it wasn’t that bad,
And if it was, that’s not a big deal,
And if it is, that’s not my fault,
And if it was, that’s Western propaganda,
And if it isn’t, you deserved it.
“Depression is a myth; tidy your room. Also, I’ve been clinically depressed for my whole adult life and I shamble from one crisis to another.”
Seeker of Carcosa@feddit.ukto World News@beehaw.org•The placement of these two headlines by Bing is just brilliantEnglish30·2 years agoThat’s capitalism and it’s obsession with ever-increasing profits for you. Often times a video game company sees the most layoffs the year after a major release. Cutting expenditure such as employee salaries simulates profit.
The Witcher 2, though it’s more of an exploit.
If you get the sword from the Lady of the Lake in the previous game, you start the prologue of TW2 with two silver swords, one being the Lady of the Lake sword. Unequip the Lady of the Lake sword so you don’t lose it to the dragon.
You now have a mid-tier silver sword that is good for half the game. You also don’t need to find a new silver sword at the start of the game.
Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Inspired the STALKER video games.
At some point in the 20th century, aliens esentially fired some rockets filled with garbage at the earth. The fallout of these rockets created several “exclusion zones” around earth. The book chiefly follows speculators who risk crossing military cordons in order to recover and sell salvaged tech.

York isn’t in the Americas. It’s also a former Viking settlement, Jorvik. A millenium later and I’m in the same place, following the same diet of meat and bread.

I’m hoping for some unique interactions as a tiefling next time around.

I found a lot of terrible and extraneous “romance” in Teen/YA fiction growing up which convinced me at the time that I disliked any romance in my fantasy. Turns out what I actually dislike is clunky sex scenes written by Mormons whose only experience is being the third at a jump hump.
Seeker of Carcosa@feddit.ukto Books@lemmy.ml•Has anyone here tried Bookwyrm? If not, what's your favorite GR alternative?5·2 years agoI use Bookwyrm and it works for what I need: track reading, rate books, view reading lists of people who have read the same books. My partner uses StoryGraph which does seem a lot cleaner and more polished, but I haven’t felt the need to switch yet.
I’d say it’s more of the same with regards to the dense jargon that requires some contextual interpretation to unravel. If you’re willing to power through that, it’s one of the most thrilling trilogies you can read.
To advance on this, the entire Karla Trilogy (of which Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is the first installment) is a fantastic Cold War spy trilogy. I’d recommend anything by John le Carré; he was an intelligence officer for MI5 and MI6. He left the service as a result of a famous double agent incident, which inspired Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

[June 26-July 2, 2023]English2·2 years agoThis past week I read A Dreamer’s Tales by Lord Dunsany, and the short stories The Doom that Came to Sarnath and The Cats of Ulthar by H.P. Lovecraft. The latter are part of the book club at !lovecraft and the former to get some background on what Lovecraft was reading at the time.
Having worked at institutions with “no Friday deadlines” as a rule, but Monday 8/9am deadlines are A-OK, I feel your pain. The “logic” from central management is that us markers don’t have to mark over weekends and have enough time to mark before classes on Wednesday-Friday, but what’s stopping me from just ignoring the assignment marking until Monday?
