It’s something about irony - the legendary nobody, famous for something mundane.

My username is actually from a side character in Terry Gilliam’s first non-Python movie - Jabberwocky.

The protagonist, Dennis, is a cooper - a barrelmaker (actually he’s a tedious putz who can’t even manage to make a barrel, but that’s another story). Early on, he goes to make his fortune in the big city, where he meets a legendary cooper - “The Wat Dabney?! The inventor of the inverted firkin?!” - who has been reduced to begging because all of the business in the city is controlled by the guilds and they’ve shut him out.

Curiously, many years later I ran across a somewhat similar character in an entirely different medium who appealed to me the same way. This one is in a manga - The Voynich Hotel, by Dowman Sayman. They have a serious problem with the boiler in the eponymous hotel, so the protagonist sets out on a quest to track down a hermit who’s reputed to be able to fix anything - Tepes, the legendary second-rate boiler engineer.

I’m not sure what appeals to me about second-rate legendary craftsmen, but…

I’ve only played the DS versions, so can’t say, but I would presume the Switch versions fix the most notorious problems (like the inexplicably slow Surf speed) so assuming they don’t also do something stupid and unnecessary like nerf the difficulty or rewrite the dialogue, they’d likely be best.

The institutionalization of authority inevitably leads to a social order in which the shallow self-interest of the ruling class usurps all other considerations.

Political power inevitably comes to be held and controlled by those who most lust for it and who are most willing to do whatever it takes to gain and hold it, and those people are virtually always malignant - some combination of narcissistic, megalomaniacal and sociopathic.

So, among other things, when it comes down to a crisis like the western world faces today, and faced in the 1930s, yes - they choose to side with the autocrats, entirely regardless of the specifics of their ideology, rather than siding with those who stand for liberty and justice and the well-being of the common people. Driven as they are by pathological self-interest and greed and entirely unconstrained as they are by their complete lack of morals, ethics, integrity or empathy, what else would they ever do?

I think they’re analogous to people who would stand and watch a stoning, then congratulate themselves on not having thrown any rocks themselves.

I don’t have the foggiest idea.

And really, if I did have a good idea, I wouldn’t post it publicly anyway. That’d just be tipping my hand to the astroturfers.

“The fediverse” really can’t. That’s just the reality of a decentralized system. It’s going to be up to individual instances to sort it out.

But that’s a good thing, because what it means is that different instances can and will try different approaches, and between them, they’ll sooner or later hit on the one(s) that will be most effective.
