- Swindled - Mostly white-collar true crime with dark humor and disdain aplenty.
- 404 Media - The folks who used to do the Cyber podcast before they left VICE and are doing far better work, indy.
- Better Offline - Another tech podcast by Ed Zitron. He loves tech and can’t stand how fucked up the tech-bros are making the whole thing, at our collective expense.

TerkErJerbs@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Which is most privacy friendly instance of lemmy?121·2 months agoGiven that all Lemmy instances are run by private individuals you should probably think about using a vpn (or dns proxy at the very least) to obfuscate your true location and data. This applies to any mainstream or corporate social media platform, obv.
On Mac I’ve found Safari gets thru every time for some reason where chrome and Firefox do not. I might have the prevent IP tracking setting enabled or whatever but I never have to turn off my VPN (nor sign in) if the other browsers get flagged. Ymmv.
That could be the case. My work machine is on Debian 12 and I believe still on x11. I haven’t messed with Wayland yet.
I use these with good success. Can set up global/system-wide or per-app gestures and multi-finger actions. Works good in my opinion.
TerkErJerbs@lemm.eeto Privacy@lemmy.ml•How do I find ad and tracking domains and scripts in academic publishing websites?5·3 months agoUse a DNS service like NextDNS or Control D and check the activity logs, block as needed. Or as others have said, UBlock has a custom rule creation feature. Use it. You select the elements you want to nuke, preview to see if it’s working as intended, if it is click save rule.

TerkErJerbs@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Has a serial killer ever been released from prison?23·6 months agoOnly two convicted murders but one of them was her own sister, Karla Homolka served 12 years and got out in 2005.
I’ve used wi-fi calling fairly extensively mostly because I’ve lived in areas where there was zero cell service but ready access to internet (via Starlink or other wireless forms of it). One thing I do know is that my phone co. requests that I fill out a form specifying where I am living currently (whilst using it) so that if I ever need to contact emergency services they’ll have a better idea of where to route the call to. For instance my phone number originates from Western BC but I could potentially be using wi-fi calling from anywhere in the province. I mention this to say, it appears my telco doesn’t have a way to triangulate me with this service.
I can further attest that wi-fi call & text reception still works fine when I have a VPN running on the router that my mobile device is connecting to. Make of that information what you wish.
Though that I have read that wi-fi calling is atrocious for privacy reasons that I have not followed up on. Given the above I’m not sure how or why that would be the case, but basically if I’m in an area with cell coverage I turn it off. I’ve always meant to look deeper into how or why it might be bad (or worse) in some way.

And also that Steam previously did publicly release SteamOS for awhile (Debian based). So hopefully one day soon they get ballsy enough to push a new/modern official linux build and profit. They haven’t even taken the old links to the SteamOS builds down. I mean c’mon!
TerkErJerbs@lemm.eeto Linux@lemmy.ml•Arch Linux and Valve Collaboration - Arch-dev-public - lists.archlinux.org121·7 months agoAdmit to not reading the whole article but does this mean they’re finally going to officially release SteamOS 3 for desktops? Or am I stuck with hacky ports from the Steam Deck?
TerkErJerbs@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think of environmental protest groups?172·7 months agoWhen extreme climate collapse really kicks in, the average person will wish it were some protesters disrupting their commute for a few hours on a weekday vs literal breakdown of infrastructure and society indefinitely.
TerkErJerbs@lemm.eeto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Anyone else getting bounced from mainstream websites with Mullvad VPN?8·8 months agoYou’ll find that with any major VPN. The IP addresses they use to proxy your traffic eventually get flagged and blocked by lots of major players. Which is why VPN companies cycle through them quite often. As others have said, you’ll either need to switch servers (and thus ips) or figure out another path.
I don’t use mull but most have a way to exclude a given url or site from the tunnel if you need it. i.e. the site will work for you but it’s coming from your own IP and unencrypted.
I set up Bunsenlabs on both of my elderly parents computers and then basically automated login stuff to the sites they use, pinned those tabs. Blocked all ads and trackers. Set Firefox to auto open on boot. Basically made them a Linux version of a chrome book where everything they need is in the browser and already active, no mudding around.
8 months later zero complaints from either of them.

Did I miss how far we came as a society to see it take a 40 year step backwards?52·8 months agoDo your research. Birth rate declines as cultural stability and wealth increase. Period.

And so… It was also probably just a bag of food waste going gnarly.
It’s actually really funny to me that a cop has to go look in the funky bag. That’s a better use of their time than a lot of things they get up to of a day. Nice one!
I read somewhere awhile back their platinum donors gave a certain tier (10k or 100k or whatever it was). To be clear I’m more than open to being surprised here, I want Ladybird to succeed. I just resent Shopify being involved in any way, I’m a little bit petty after slogging it out at that company awhile because I know what they’re all about.
CopWatch used to be pretty active and has apps for iOS and Android, but I see they haven’t been updated in a couple of years.
