So! Stop? You’re 30, not 70

Literally everyone I know does, though. It’s your calendar, your email, your communication. The only jobs I can imagine that you don’t need to have a mobile device are when you are a drone who has to sit where the boss tells you all day long. Even then, your work likely communicates with staff via text or an app.
Has it been awhile since you worked somewhere?
Lol I don’t know. I guess if you work at Amazon or something having one could be considered optional. My job is literally dependant on my cell phone, and my ability to handle emails calls and texts while away from the office is a core of my ability to earn enough money to pay my bills.
If I didn’t have a cell phone for even 1 day, I would make $0 that day at my job.
Agreed and that’d be great. But also, no that doesn’t help this individual right now at all.
Of course a better paying job will help. If your job paid more and you spend the same, suddenly and by definition, the person would not be as broke.
Why even mention no cell phones?
In the 1700s they budgeted by not paying all electric bill! So frugal. 🤣
No one in western society can function or even have a job probably, without a cell phone in 2023
When I had a job that didn’t pay enough, I did side work. For me, for a long time, that was reffing mens hockey.
Another time I was struggling I approached my boss and said I know I’m not your best employee right now, but I want to turn it around and get into a higher paying position. What do you need me to do? Then I did it, and moved up.
5 yrs ago we moved to anew city and I started over in a new thing. I took a job that didn’t really cover our bills, and my wife and I had to make some cuts.
But I wanted certain freedoms like the freedom to do my hobbies or take a vacation, so identified ways to earn additional income through the job I had (in my case it was handling little repairs like replacing smoke detector batteries and light bulbs, installing missing door stops and changing deadbolts). I’ve kept grinding until I took over for my boss, and I continue to handle repairs also. Effectively I work a job and side job at the same time 6 days a week. I work fucking hard, but I had nice vacations with my fam this summer, live in a good house and drive a good vehicle.
So honestly - and while I don’t think this is how it should be - in the system we have, I just grind harder. I am amazed at my ability to do this now in my 30s and now 40s compared to how lazy (in hindsight) I was in my 20s.
By the way! I’m also pretty happy now because my job is (mostly) ok, I don’t dread Mondays or anything most weeks.
Haven’t watched in 20 yrs.
Clockwork orange, on the other hand I watch every couple yrs

Didn’t take a personal day because he was feeling low. Did his job, earning for the man. And he fucking deserved that candy!

Screwthehole@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What thing are you exponentially more experienced in than the average person?English2·2 years agoI book service calls (repairs). Between calls and especially using my hands free while driving between service calls, I return phone calls and texts. When I get where I’m going, if I’m ever early, I respond to emails or place calls. If I finish a thing early or ever have to wait for people, I return texts calls and emails while waiting.
Ive also aced driving distance between places in the city where I work so I’m able to build a solid schedule without running behind.
At night, to clear my head, I schedule a bunch of texts and emails to send off first thing in the morning. Gives the impression I’m working even though I’m probably still asleep.

Ive become a fucking pro at squeezing as many tasks into a day as I possibly can. I frequently get told they have no idea how I keep on top of things. I basically work 2 and a half full time jobs for people at the same company, and I accomplish it by overlapping my time and billing per item not per hour

If it’s actually just 4 hrs, I might just bite the bullet and do it.
And potentially negotiate a pay bump, as you agree to increase your value to their benefit, as long as there’s something in it for you also. Especially if working in Z is at all less convenient
Screwthehole@lemmy.worldto Chess@lemmy.ml•Puzzle: Black to move and get an advantageEnglish1·2 years agoCouple reasons I think of.
1 is you lose your bishop to the white pawn next. Then the King has more mobility to get away from your queen/rook
And, you still haven’t broken the stalemate of the white rook keeping your pawn from promotion. White just never moves the rook and black can’t move his rook and that leaves a knight and two pawns against a king and two pawns… With a white rook covering 7, while the black rook just stares on. The bishop sacrifice at that moment gives black a checkmate in 3 (you’re right not 2).
How do you see it playing out if black takes the pawn?
Screwthehole@lemmy.worldto Chess@lemmy.ml•Puzzle: Black to move and get an advantageEnglish1·2 years agoRight now black can’t promote their pawn without losing it, as soon as he tries, white takes it. Blocking it with the bishop sets up the only situation where the new queen is a factor in the game… Which happens to be a checkmate in 2 moves.
Any other move and I’d bet white wins
Screwthehole@lemmy.worldto Chess@lemmy.ml•Puzzle: Black to move and get an advantageEnglish1·2 years agoI think if you do that white has a path to victory. You lose the bishop, still can’t queen your pawn, and white can now pressure your king position.
The move here is genius because it literally locks up the game.
I didn’t mean stop living with parents I meant stop failing.
Shit, I failed for most of my 20s and then it got worse. Waaaaay fucking worse, like, I Mean it when I say worst than for most people. I don’t really want to get into it here, but bad.
And then I learned some lessons and worked my ass off and here we are.
