Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some good party games?5·6 months agoI second the Nerts recommendation because when I was a teen I played Ligretto (Basically just a branded Nerts) at one party and we all had a blast. To this day I wish I had the opportunity to play it again, but I’m not a party guy nor do I have that many decks of cards so /shrug
Kinda ironic I saw this post right after this other one lol: Three Democrats Re-Introduce Bill That Would Bring Ranked Choice Voting to Congressional Elections Across America

Chess@lemmy.ml•Qf5 is a major blunder. Can you spot why? (Answer in comments)5·9 months agoAnswer
That’s because after the best move (Qxf5) black can’t recapture the queen. If they do (as was the case for my opponent) there’s simply Bxb5, which is a double check and mate.
After white takes the queen the best move for black is Bd6 according to the engine, and black is just down a queen, with white having an advantage of +5.46.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is an underrated/forgotten video game that you think deserved a second chance?2·10 months agoPlants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare
It’s a shame that it doesn’t seem to have that many players anymore. It’s a lot like other multi-class shooter games like Overwatch and Paladins, but about three times more crazy and weird, and I had a ton of fun playing it as a teen.
I’ve heard Garden Warfare 2 is pretty good too though, so I’ll consider buying it at some point (when I have money).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever, given someone a major step up in life, been a mentor, and measurably altered the trajectory of their life for the better?9·10 months agoNot sure how deeply positive it was necessarily, but as far as I can tell I changed at least one person’s life significantly.
When I was in middle school I learned how to solve the Rubik’s cube through online tutorials, and afterwards I was basically addicted to it for a while and I was messing with a cube all the time. One of my classmates was interested in learning how to solve one, so I drew a bunch of guides and taught him the terminology, and soon enough he was also hooked on the Rubik’s cube.
I eventually grew tired of it, but he kept going and learned how to solve all sorts of smaller and bigger cubes and pyramids. I bumped into him at uni a few years later and he had a cube in his hand lol. Last I heard of him he was even participating in some local competitions, but idk what he’s up to now.
Even if he ultimately gave up on his speedcubing dreams I can at least say that I introduced him to a cool new hobby that kept him entertained for several years.

Steam@lemmy.ml•What do you think of this prediction?1041·11 months agoKinda sounds like how worker cooperatives work tbh, but with Gabe still technically being the owner.
I remember reading a news piece a while back about how the founder of a food company made sure to transfer ownership to the employees before leaving. While we’re talking about worst-case scenarios, let’s also hope for the best and hope that Gabe has a similar plan.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is your favorite season?4·11 months agoWinter because I live in Brazil, which is a tropical and very humid country so the heat can get unbearable even here in the south where it’s colder compared to the north.
There are a few cities that get cold enough to reach negative Cº, but where I live it’s mostly between 10º-20º during winter so I just need some extra coats and more blankets and I’m happy. During summer I can only take off so many layers before it becomes illegal.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•You have 15$. How would you spend it so that you'll be the happiest you can be for 15$ ?23·11 months agoBuy Minecraft, which apparently is on sale for $14.99. It’s not quite as fun when all your friends have the official version and get to play together while you’re stuck with an - *ahem* - unofficial version.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What horror story/movie/game/whatever terrifies you even though it's fictional?3·1 year agoOne that I really like is Dear David by Adam Ellis. And yeah yeah, I know that he’s going for the usual “true ghost story” marketing shtick or whatever, but these stories that don’t just use cheap jumpscares and instead build a sense of constant threat and impending doom are the ones that make it harder for me to sleep at night.
I heard that the movie is trash though 🙈

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•In your country, what "common" animals are tourists most excited to see?80·1 year agoCapybaras are pretty common in the area where I live, and really throughout most of Brazil. Don’t get me wrong, we still think they’re pretty cute, but I’ve seen some Americans get really excited about them.
Oh, and the maned wolf. To be fair, I think they’re pretty neat too.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the most horrifying thing you've seen on the internet that didn't involve gore?91·1 year agoAlthough I don’t have kids everything I’ve heard about the Ruby Franke/8 Passengers case made my blood boil. That scumbag saw her kids as nothing but a way to get clicks and money, and I’m glad that she’s going to rot in prison.
And related to this, add animal abuse to the list of things that make my blood boil too. It’s wild to think that until recently there was such a thing as a thriving “monkey torture network”.

Memes@lemmy.ml•Not looking to pick a fight but.. there's only seven stories in the world.53·1 year agoPlease tell me how an AI model can distinguish between “inspiration” and plagiarism then.
[…] they just spit out something that it “thinks” is the best match for the prompt based on its training data and thus could not make this distinction in order to actively avoid plagiarism.
I’m not entirely sure what the argument is here. Artists don’t scour the internet for any image that looks like their own drawings to avoid plagiarism, and often use photos or the artwork of others as reference, but that doesn’t mean they’re plagiarizing.
Plagiarism is about passing off someone else’s work as your own, and image-generation models are trained with the intent to generalize - that is, being able to generate things it’s never seen before, not just copy, which is why we’re able to create an image of an astronaut riding a horse even though that’s something the model obviously would’ve never seen, and why we’re able to teach the models new concepts with methods like textual inversion or Dreambooth.
