  • I’ve drank, and got drunk, at exactly one work function in my current capacity. The living hell that was a day of serious meetings with 3 hours of sleep and a wicked hangover/still being drunk has made all other functions water and bed by 9:30 affairs.

Luckily everyone in the meetings had either made the same mistake before, or were functioning alcoholics, so the fallout was just being a pile of misery.

If a VP decides to take everyone for drinks at a club after the official function, at absolute most show up to nurse one drink then leave. Do not be the last one out the door.

  • I might be going to a mini Burning Man style event in May. Never been to a burn, or even a music festival, before.

It promises to be an interesting experience, one way or another. If nothing else, I like the idea of partying with a bunch of artsy weirdos off their tits for several days. We’ll see if I’ve aged out of that, lol.

That and, should I choose to prepare all of the necessary materials to pack in and out, I could do a temporary version of a dream I’ve had: hash and coffee club tent! 'Cause gifting cannabis products to adults is 100% legal here now (not that this would’ve been a barrier anyway, but still)!

  • Let me preface this by saying that, compared to your average Lemmy user, I am not a technical person. What stuck in my head was removing the radio and comms tech completely - no cell radio, no wifi, no GPS. Literally just make it an average cellphone sized offline tablet, where you’re adding stuff only via the USB port or SD card slot.

Assuming this were possible/actually worth it, would probably need custom firmware to actually make it useable anyway. Just taking an off the shelf smartphone and using a custom launcher would likely be the more practical route, but I’d be more interested if it was offline only from a pure hardware perspective.

But I digress - I just thought it was funny to see this when it seriously was the “What if?” that made it hard for me to get to sleep the other day.

  • Erowid is still good, though I wish there was a little more info about current operations and projects outside of maintaining the experience report database. As far as I can tell, both Erowid Monthly and Erowid Extracts are dead, Ask Erowid is dead, DrugsData is not currently receiving samples, etc.

There’s reason to play some stuff close to the chest, obviously, but there used to be more activity than just the experience database, and it’s sad to see the other functions languish. But as a repository of drug information it’s still pretty great.

A newer good harm reduction/info site is tripsit.me, which also has a trip sit via chat service. Can’t speak to the quality of the chat service, over something like the Fireside Project which has been around for a while now, but the infosheets on tripsit are pretty good.

Edit: Ugh, going through the other Erowid sections again…beginning to think I need to step up and see if they want more volunteers. Lots of dead links where Wayback can probably help a ton, the Character vault can probably be expanded quite a bit, etc. But this all might just be the focus moving on a bit. I just wanted to see Ralph Metzner’s blog, since you hear so much about Tim Leary and Ram Dass but Metzner was right there with 'em.

  • Assuming this was regular force equivalent, I can’t truly relate, but as a teen I got injured and RTU’d on CAF BMQ as a reservist, eventually lead to seeking a discharge because in the time I was waiting for the next course, I just wasn’t interested anymore and Burger King was the preferable part-time job.

One thing I will say is, as much as possible, enjoy the small things you can get away with not being in boot (assuming you’re living in purely civvy circumstances). Make your bed? Fuck that! Hospital corners are for orderlies! I don’t know what it was, but straight refusal to make my bed for like a month or two was cathartic as fuck.

Acronyms? Nah fam, say the whole god damned phrase, every time, for everything (obviously I didn’t keep this up, lol).

Mine’s a sillier example, obviously, but taking this perspective might point you in a useful direction, at least a tiny bit. Hang in there.

  • I’d support it. If something is worthy of drawing attention to, it’s worth taking a screenshot and sharing that - preferably with a backup to Wayback Machine.

There’s no need to drive traffic to or engagement with X imo, even if it’s relatively minimal.

Same for Meta products really, though idk if Instagram has some defense against screenshots (I know there’s other photo-focused services that do, I’m just not on Instagram very often/recently at all so idk).

Edit: You know, given the existence of xcancel and similar services, I want to walk this back a little. People are in here making good points - screenshots can be doctored, and having access to a trusted mirrored/archived source is better for verification purposes while still accomplishing what I’d like to see. If it’s technically possible to do, some automatic means of doing that would be cool, but even that’s a bit iffy. Maybe something like that Pipedbot thing could work, even if people kinda hate those bots. Best choice is just posting mirrored/archive links from the get go.

  • To be clear, I’m not arguing that people don’t put 88 as a clear dog whistle to white supremacists/general Nazi bullshit. This is more to the comment “who puts their birth year in their username?” bit specifically. The answer is a lot of people.

I also am not excusing Yen for his pro-Trump comments - that was fucking bullshit and I’m deeply disappointed - I’m just saying the YOB thing is a thing, but also coincidentally I also can’t seem to find a source to prove if he’s also doing the YOB thing or something else.

Note to self: Limit Lemmy to 3 beers max, particularly where Trumpian bullshit is involved. And thank god for autocorrect. Apologies, I really should not be interneting right now.
