Wouldn’t the better policy be to practice device compartmentalization? I have the ‘pleasure’ of interacting with a non-trusted device about 40 hours a week, and I can tell you the number of personal logins I access from that compartment is none

But what crimes the US is and is not guilty of has virtually no bearing on the fact that 19 muslim men literally took up box cutters against passenger airliners as a profession of their faith. The hijackers didn’t care about bin Laden’s politics, they saw an opportunity to kill infidels and they took it. They certainly didn’t care about Iran Contra or Mosadegh or fucking Halliburton profiteering, and they certainly didn’t become fundamentalists because of those things.
The wikipedia links are stunningly impertinent. The charts contexually lame. Muslim fundamentalism is the cause of the 9/11 attacks; no ackchually-tier insistence on proximate versus ultimate cause is necessary.
9/11 has nothing to do with the US overthrow of foreign governments. The US didn’t make bin Laden into what he became, bin Laden did. The guy was an egomaniac bedazzled by his own bullshit. The notion that the attacks were reeeaaally about oil access or regime change or economic disparity as opposed to bloodyminded religious zealotry is a lie.

When government/corporate services are involved, I suggest doing as much as you can via the web browser as opposed to app, in the interests of privacy and civil liberty.
So long as it’s going through the browser we have a degree of control over functionality and connectivity. Apps strip that away. Apps are you doing everything on their terms, while suffering an ad (their logo) on your home screen rent-free. You can pin browser bookmarks to home as well in Android.
Bots aren’t the problem. You mistake the tool for its operator by cursing a bot. If I had a specific purpose for a bot, I’d use one. The difference between my using a bot and a clickfarmer using a bot is that I wouldn’t treat Lemmy instances as a resource to be exploited (and ultimately ruined). Such an attitude would inform the how and the what behind my bot use.
The problem as always comes back to bad incentives, bad design and bad behaviour.
I can see the measures we currently take for ads (large user-maintained subscribable blocklists) being part of the solution. That, and some form of privacy-respecting POW scheme.
The plebs must not be able to talk to each other. Interfere with their conversations. Mediate them, distort them, insert your signal (theirs is the noise!), repackage them for other plebs so those plebs don’t start conversation of their own. The plebs must not be able to talk to each other.
