I laughed at the malware part. This makes me question the entire Librewolf project. If opinions are formed based on random YouTube creators, how can we trust any decision made on Librewolf?
Edit: clarification on how the search engine was selected was provided by @fishonthenet@lemmy.ml.
I watched the video now, and while I get that the stuff said in it doesn’t make sense I fail to understand what made you assume that we form opinions based on youtube videos. if you want to know how you can trust the decisions check gitlab and see how everything is documented and researched properly.
The reply below from @opalraava@lemmy.ml, combined with sharing this video, is what makes it sound like opinions are formed from YouTube videos.
Source
Meaning, a bit of information isn’t complete crap, if you hear it often from YouTubers.
well I’m not asking that you take my words for it:
I also don’t agree with the above video (and feel free to discuss in here why you also don’t), but don’t question the level of research without first checking.
The purpose of this thread was to check what the situation is, but it remained unclear even after multiple questions from @beta_tester@lemmy.ml.
This is certainly a better representation of the situation than provided by @opalraava@lemmy.ml. It looks like you were quite thorough in your comparison, which is great!
I think it’s positive to see what people think of the project, if and how they use it, and what they report experiencing the app.
I shared it because it’s a recent video, and I wanted something to say ‘hi’ with:) But it’s a topic I hear more often so it’s not completely crap. Mental Outlaw, a much more serious Youtuber, also denounced ddg.

Searx. It’s not centralized and is open-source.
Well gosh, you read a lot into my motivations based on a Hello World post. Thanks for that. Note to self: YouTube video’s with people sharing their opinion is evil on Lemmy. Also, don’t discuss search engines, or basically anything else here.

Brave search works great.

Facebook is proprietary software, while Brave Search can be used without JavaScript. Facebook, like DuckDuckGo, also censors “disinformation”.
Brave Search is also nonFLOSS and we could also argue that with a client using Facebook API, Facebook could be used without JavaScript.

I’ll leave the rest to others as I haven’t watched the video nor I followed well enough the discussion between you, @opalraava@lemmy.ml and @Echedenyan@lemmy.ml.
regarding this tho, I wanted to say that we used to have brave in the search engine list, and it was then removed in order to reduce the length of it, and keep only what’s essential. the list is already pretty long as right now, so I don’t think it’s coming back anytime soon, leave alone making it default. IIRC we decided the same day as the news came out that we were going to stick to DDG and just not give a fuck about everything outside of privacy, users can always change to what they like.
I personally would have loved to have searx as default but forcing users to default to a particular instance is a bad move imo. we still include it tho, as the project deserves attention. if we had more people helping maybe we could have setup a librewolf instance of some kind, but it is what is :-)
You have MetaGer as metasearch engine which can be configured to use its own crawler if self-hosting or InfinitySearch which has several versions and has its own crawler by default plus other indexes. Both FLOSS.
The last one needs self-hosting or payment involved. There is other version which is decentralized too.
About “product” in the sense you explain there, no. I stop reading when someone start using that for describing anything and is not in the sense of simple result of work but in the commercial sense as which inviting people to use something and earn audience (even if money is not involved directly).
BTW, I was just showing jorgesumle their error in their assumption there.
