Open Source@lemmy.ml•Topographic map apps for mobileEnglish
4·2 months agoFor having a dedicated topo setup I would recommend OSMand. CoMaps/OrganicMaps does contour lines too but you can configure things way more in OSMand and it makes a huge difference. I have both apps so here are screenshots of the same place to compare

15·2 months agoHell half of the front page posts seem to be ads anymore
If you don’t want to use a phone because of privacy concerns there are also stand alone meshtastic devices with blackberry style keyboards too

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Let's talk maps for driving, transit, finding businesses? OsmAnd, Organic Maps, CoMaps , etcEnglish
2·3 months agoOSMand seems kinda clunky but it lets you do more stuff to really customize it if you want but I still find myself getting lost in the menus sometimes. But I like it for hiking/outdoorsy stuff
Organic Maps/Comaps is slick and smooth and really easy to use for most everyday stuff we’d use Google Maps for
Other people have mentioned it but one of the best things you can do is a little mapping of your local area on OpenStreetMap. Try to include the places you go to the most, or at least making notes so other know what needs added. That makes any app or service that uses it better for yourself and others around you
That’s fair, I think it’s cool because I have so few people in range normally.
People have put nodes on essentially a weather balloon and that had cool results
Airline passengers with nodes are amazing repeaters for the few minutes they are overhead. Thanks to them I’ve seen signals hop to my nodes from nearly 200 miles away
It’s crazy how fast meshtastic/lora technologies have taken off in just a few years

Privacy@lemmy.ml•If and how much longer until they take cash and browser-based banking from us?English
8·3 months agoWell yeah you don’t need currency when value is based on physical stuff Catan style. I make brick, I trade for milk.
But when you have a trade that doesn’t make physical goods or doesn’t involve the stuff you have to offer you’ll need a do-good coupon that everyone agrees to represent value.

13·3 months agoWith AI seeping into everything I think offline backups should be made of everything that is important to you or your organization.
Imagine you are a government or corporation. Instead of recognising and dealing with any painful past events you just pull a 1984 and rewrite history, changing movies and editing old documents.
This is scary shit because we know people are already abusing it for their gain

Privacy@lemmy.ml•How to get TSA PreCheck while protecting privacy?English
9·3 months agoFingerprints are the least invasive of biometrics imo. If your fingerprints are weak the govt may put you under more scrutiny “just in case” and I think that would be a much greater violation of your privacy
Prints prove you were in a place just like an airport camera and airline records would. As long as your phone/computer etc isn’t unlocked via fingerprint that’s really all it can be used for on most cases. Don’t get me wrong it isn’t ideal and I see your point of wanting to avoid giving that away regardless
