Linux@lemmy.ml•what debian compatible live usb software do you use to test distros or gparted and install them?English
2·4 months agoOK, does Ventoy now include tools of some sort and not just a way to boot ISOs? Because as far as I know, it just boots LiveUSB images you place on it. If one of those happens to have partitioning tools, you’re using the tools included in that distro.

Linux@lemmy.ml•GitHub - winapps-org/winapps: Run Windows apps such as Microsoft Office/Adobe in Linux (Ubuntu/Fedora) and GNOME/KDE as if they were a part of the native OS, including Nautilus integration.
1·4 months agoI’ve been using the same windows/dockur setup for a couple years that they outline in the Winapp docs. It uses KVM via a docker cap you give it permission for in the docker compose.
It should work with this Winapp thing, but I haven’t gotten much success so far trying to connect it. I’ve just been RDPing into them but I’d have liked to just pull the relevant windows alone, more like Terminal Service Applications.

6·4 months agoYah, I dinked with this for far too long on several docker-based windows installs I have around the network including localhost on a non-standard port. Fails to set up and gives no messages to follow up when it does. I can connect to them fine with a normal xfreerdp command.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I switched from Arch btw to fedora kionite AMAEnglish
41·4 months agoI tried Kinoite a while back and the included Box Buddy couldn’t clone containers. I took it all the way back to the docker command that was cloning and it would just fail out. Same version of Box Buddy/Distrobox/docker on regular Fedora worked fine. Pinged the developer of Box Buddy and he figured it was something about how Kinoite worked that was messing with it and I should ask the Kinoite maintainers. At that point my curiosity was exhausted and I’d run into the software install annoyances with rpm-ostree based distros, and just went back to Fedora.
If you say so. MX is a Debian base, so it’s more a testament to Debian’s reliability.
There was a pretty good indication that Manjaro was click-botting it a few years back, then Mint, and now MX. While I actually like Manjaro, that team is totally not above having done such a thing. And pretty much as soon as the rumors about that started, it mysteriously started dropping in the ranking…
Why? For a long time, DW was considered a source of distro recommendation and popularity. With these “attacks”, it’s become a community joke and not considered much of a real indication.
Distrowatch has been gamed for years.
I rarely see any references to MX in Linux forums, I don’t think it’s anywhere near as popular as DW would indicate.

6·4 months agoGet your head out of installing apps via their websites like Windows. While it’s often possible, it’s preferable to use your distros package manager. If it’s not in the repo, try flathub. Finally, if they have an Appimage, use that, many distros will integrate Appimages automagically. All that stuff gets taken care of for you.
Last resort is what you ended up doing and having to install/update manually. I mean, it depends on the package but if you’re using a common distro like Ubuntu/Fedora/Arch, there should be a package ready to go for nearly anything that supports Linux.

5·5 months agoI would crawl across broken glass naked to avoid using Gnome, but it is way better for tablets. You can try KDE, maybe you can get it to work somewhat, but unfortunately Gnome has been way ahead on touchscreen usability.
Consequently, I only use Android tablets.
