3·27 days agoI love it!
Ah. That’s not an issue for me, per se, but it is wholly unethical. I guess I’ll stop using it then…
I trust Mullvad with my card number a lot more than Amazon, and I did mention that I would have paid with Monero if only I had any.
As for Posteo, great experiences all around. It mostly just gets out of your way and, unlike more popular providers, isn’t always telling you about how great it is. However, the SPAM filter could be better.

5·2 months agoNo, I mean hacking. Breaking into computers remotely, malware production, etc.

SimpleX?
Tox would also be fantastic, but they need to improve their encryption and get it audited. Also, some nicer UIs in the various clients would be nice.
Bitwarden.
If it works, I suppose not.

10·2 months agoIf you’re just writing those languages, here are my picks:
For Linux and Unix:
- Xed (just called “Text Editor” in the menu)
- Geany
- Notepadqq
- Micro (terminal, but very friendly)
- Nano (also terminal, also friendly)
For Windows:
- Notepad++
- VSCodium
For macOS:
- Micro
- Nano
- VSCodium

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is there something like GitHub, but without big tech involvement, no data collection, no ads, open source, and preferably decentralized (maybe Fediverse or even P2P)?English
10·3 months agoNOTE: URLs written in italics are unofficial/self-hosted instances of their respective version control systems.
- Forgejo (https://codeberg.org/) and Gitea (https://tildegit.org/) are great.
- sourcehut (https://sr.ht/) is fantastic, and also offers Mercurial hosting.
- source.community (gemini://source.community) is interesting.
- Fossil (https://code.rosaelefanten.org/) is also interesting, and doesn’t use Git.
- Savannah (https://savannah.nongnu.org/) is the version control system used by the FSF and the GNU project. Uses CVS and Git, with ViewVC and cgit frontends. You must make regular commits, otherwise your account may be pruned.
My firewall varies from installation-to-installation, as it’s always client-side with a custom DNS provider. Right now, I’m using YaST Firewall on my main machine, iptables on my old ThinkPad, and my other machines are currently between operating systems. In the past, I have also dabbled in ufw, pf, and awall.
In addition to that, I generally use NextDNS (though I also get excellent results with Mullvad DNS).
My policy is simple: reject all incoming connections, except for Torrent and Syncthing.
This was mentioned in Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. So, what do we do about it?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Why is it so hard to get friends to leave Discord, WhatsApp, Instagram, and others? Anyone else feel this?English
12·3 months agoYeah, this is so fucking annoying. I’ve been banging on about Signal for years, but everyone except a small handful of my wisest friends insist upon using WhatsApp and Discord.
Almost everyone I know also uses Instagram, and no other social media. I am yet to meet someone in real life who even has Mastodon.

I swear to Hephaestus, at this point I’m considering switching to UBPorts or Sailfish OS or something…

Tor - The Onion Router@lemmy.ml•Hey so when do you use Tor?English
1·4 months agoOn desktop, pretty much only when I need to access an Onion site.
I also route my Torrent client through Tor, as neither my router nor my VPN allow port forwarding, but I should be able to seed over Tor without much of an issue (still working out the kinks though).
On mobile, I use Tor Browser as my main browser because it provides the best fingerprinting protection, so I’m stuck using the Tor network as a result.

Buy and use a burner phone while you’re there, and remember that VPNs are illegal.
