Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Who's the worst president the US has ever had?English
4·2 years agoChrist. most of them.
George Washington got to be in charge of a country that enshrined chattel slavery in its constitution for 20 years. Thomas Jefferson provided military aid to France’s efforts to quash a slave revolt in Haiti. Andrew Jackson personally orchestrated a genocide against the Cherokee, Creek, and Choctaw (all of whom were aligned with american interests). Zachary Taylor put a bounty on bison, in an effort to starve the native Americans of the great plains. Abraham Lincoln allowed his western military expeditions to do basically whatever to the native Americans. Andrew Johnson started the process of letting confederate leadership be who directed reconstruction rather than being punished for it.
And here we reach Ulysses S Grant. one of America’s favorite punching bag presidents because he got scammed rather frequently, but when you dig into why he was prone to getting scammed, it’s because he thought it was America’s duty to use its economic power to help the lowest people in society. it’s hard to be mad at a guy who was trying so hard to help people that sometimes he let someone con him into thinking they deserved help.
i can keep going on how a ton of our historical presidents have sucked. i’m still personally willing to say the top 3 are Andrew Jackson, Ronald Reagan, and Donald trump

16·2 years agoi hope someone working on KDE sees this and says “well this is unacceptable. we have to figure out why this is causing so much frame lag” and the ability to enhugen your cursor remains forever.
new is a different concept from first api stable release. it’s been in development since 2002. 0.21 was the most recent release, and the software has been pretty much usable since 2010 at least. but this 1.0 release is a big deal because it basically means any features you currently know and like can be expected to be there for forever. it’s more of a promise than a time-based release measure

6·2 years agoi took a month long hiatus and am probably gonna continue that pattern. the threadiverse has gone completely insane the last couple months and i worry about the people for whom this is their sole gateway into the fediverse, and what they think the consensus on what reality is. i’m mostly on mastodon at this point and have been just… talking to my neighbors more

2·2 years agoi think some big project, something really important, needs to migrate for the masses of devs to move too
read up to date current docs and know they are for the current working state of the system, potentially when i don’t have a net connection because i’m troubleshooting PID 0/1
that’s a great example of bad docs.
this is everything i see monitoring Linux boxes everyday. we’ve shifted mostly to OpenRC about it. i can’t imagine defending SystemD if you have experienced anything other than it and SysInitV. yeah compared to SysInitV, it’s really nice, but to say it’s good and stable? that’s like praising your landlord for all the work they do and the reason they haven’t fixed your broken dishwasher is because they’re so busy from what a good landlord they are
In fact, the situation has gotten much worse. The coupling of SystemD’s components to each other has gotten tighter. The coupling of things that aren’t SystemD to SystemD has gotten tighter. SystemD itself has gotten less stable. The overall result? Our operating systems require more, not less, troubleshooting, and they’re less, not more, enjoyable to use and develop on
SystemD has been such a frustration the last couple years with the wonderful simplicity and stability it used to provide managing a system completely out the door as its main development company (RedHat) has stopped giving any kind of a shit about being a positive force in the world. We all shoulda listened 10 years ago when the greybeards were telling us not to fall for an init system trying to do too much.
