OK, I see a lot of post/shitpost about that, but is it that real ? Do you think migration toward Mastodon will last ? Will it be enough to create a long lasting positive momentum ? Or will people slowly leave to other proprietary social networks, or even back to Twitter ?

@PP44 @uthredii Last I saw Mastodon has just over 200,000 users, up from less than 40,000 two weeks ago. To put that in perspective, when they shut down AOL Instant Messenger because “no one was using it anymore” they were averaging 1,000,000 users a day

Thanks, good perspective. Even if the history behind the two services are different.

Mastodon has been growing fast over the last week. 3-4 data ago it had 1m monthly active users. You can see that there has been loads of sign ups since then so that number is probably higher now.

The current influx probably won’t last.

I think Mastadon has hit a bit of a critical mass recently. So I wouldn’t be surprised if there is continued sustainable growth.

people will slow down coming to mastodon. This has always been the case in the past. But mastodon is awesome nonetheless, I liked spending time there even before twitter migration. It’s not better or worse without the users from twitter.

Well, mastodon has been around for a good amount of years now. So if new comers can figure it out, they might want to stay and build roots here.

This wave feels different from the previous ones. It’s not just the techies scouting things out anymore. They’re actively bringing non-tech friends over.
And there’s quite a few people migrating who use social media professionally, who often have a rather large following.

If Musk continues this barrage of bad news for a little longer, these friend groups and professionals might get beyond the initial exploration phase and establish the Fediverse as a place where they’re active.

In either case, a lot of people are learning about the Fediverse and might be more willing to migrate in the future.

Elon Musk has done a tremendous job in making alternative social media platforms flourish!

@uthredii Influx of users doesn’t mean success. Mastodon.social is so slow right now that people who don’t realize how big the 'verse is, will just abondon and go back to birdsite, that’s not a plus

ITT: Twitter lefties complaining about not being able to censor people who they disagree with, moving to a platform that allows them an even smaller echo chamber to espouse their insane beliefs in.
